Bring the Boat?

A couple of recent threads have showcased the issue of bringing along a boat while RVing. In one thread a member posted pictures of his foldable that he straps to the side of his trailer, and in another thread a member was discussing wanting a 5er so that he could triple tow. My question is this..Do you bring a boat along? IF so how do you transport it?

I personally have a 10ft inflatable and a 3.5hp mercury that have traveled in the pickup bed for many tent camping trips and wil continue their service into my RV years.

Camping and fishing go hand in hand with us.
We have a travel trailer.
(I'm the guy with the porta-bote mounted to the side of the trailer).

I have a T.T. and we take our kayaks with us when ever we can. That being said, I put them in the bed of the pickup, then close the tail-gate so the kayaks are raised in the back. I still have room for other camping supplies in the bed.

Two.. Always.. 1 canoe and a kayak.. Praising the portability of small boats. They go on the truck

We take our 10' inflatable dinghy and 9.9 Merc on most trips. I also have an aluminum trailer that breaks down and fits on the 8'x5' deck on the front of our Aframe camper so we can haul the boat for some river fishing or wave jumping on Lake Michigan.

We bought our new eagle ht 5th specifically so we could double tow our MasterCraft Prostar 190 ski boat. Driving 2 vehicles sucks!

I fish out of this. Assembles/disassembles in minutes. I fashioned the back storage area out of an old storage container. My wife has a Kayak. Click image for larger version

In BC we can't double tow so no pulling a boat unless we take 2 trips since our second vehicle won't pull the boat. We do take kayaks camping quite often.

We have a 17 ft Old Town Penobscot canoe that we picked up at a garage sale and "refurbished". We strap it to the roof of the truck and a removable ladder rack that I picked up for pretty cheap online using ratchet straps, with a rope from the bow down over the hood tied to the tow hooks, and another rope tied from the stern to the rear bumper. It works well for us. We can also put the bikes under the canoe in the bed of the truck on a semi-homemade rack that uses fork clamps. With the canoe and the bikes, I still have room in the bed for the generator, air compressor and spare fuel or water if needed, and I could fit more if I needed to pack anything else. We have yet to load all that up at once (we have loaded each item separately on various trips), but I'm ready for when it does happen!

I bought the canoe with a special trolling motor mount, but DW won't let me get a motor. She says "that defeats the whole point of canoeing". Whatever.

I own a Penobscot that is a great canoe. I don't canoe much anymore because it is so scary with large dogs in the boat, and you know my boys gotta come along.

Easy, my friends have boats and keep them stored at the lake all season. We just go to the lake, throw in a couple bucks for gas and enjoy the ride .

For us boating and camping go hand in hand. we have a favorite lake we go to so we store both within 3 miles of the campground during the summer. If we just want to go somewhere camping we go down and pick the camper up

Summer camping is all about the lake and water sports. We always take the boat and often take the jet skis too.

So those of you that tow boats with a 5th wheel, how do you meet the typical state requirement of a max length of 65 ft? I have been looking to upgrade, but when I do the math I am always over length, except for the shortest 5th wheel.
Figure 21' truck + 29' 5th wheel behind the truck + 22' for a typical 16' boat on a trailer you get 72', 7 feet over the max of most states. If I towed a small 14' boat and cut the tongue I could get the boat trailer down to maybe 18', still 3' over the max. ???????

We do the same. The lake we go to is about 65 miles from the house and the storage is cheap so we leave both of them there year round.

I showed my 13 year old son the Porta-Bote info you posted the other day. He really wants one. I guess he will have to work hard to earn enough cash to buy it plus all the supplies.

We have a few canoes, but no roof racks to haul them with the TT.

We have an 18' ski boat in addition to our Jayco. Only twice have we brought it along by using our other vehicle to tow it. Both times we loved doing it but it probably won't become a regular thing. Between the two trucks, each with a trailer, and the 150hp Evinrude on the boat it's a good way to buy an obscene amount of gas. As long as prices stay reasonable it'll be a once or twice a year thing. If we ever get back to $4/gal I'd probably skip it.

Well, I learned about porta-bote from my (then) 16 year old nephew. So you can tell your son that it is possible. My nephew worked jobs to be able to afford it. He just has the oars, no motor. They don't have a travel trailer, he just ties it to the top rack of their SUV.
