OK, thanks. It tells me it's a rat snake which matches what others said. As others said they are good have around, but then that's really true of all snakes even the poisonous ones.

That looks like a black snake, sometimes called a rat snake. Very nice to have them on your property as they will keep the rodent population down.

I would have died right then and there. I've had bad experiences with snakes as a kid and have been scared of them ever since. A small green garter snake nearly got me a court martial when I was on active duty.

typically a poisonous sale has a head larger than its body. we have blacks snakes (non poisonous) head and body are same shape....snakes in general are good to have around just know which ones are poisonous.have handled black snakes, which can bit.

Common rat snake, sometimes called a “chicken snake”. One evening a couple of months ago, I opened the door to our fifth wheel, and before I could even react, one just like this quickly crawled up our steps and got inside. Curled up under one of our two recliners. I had a large dip net in my shop, got it, caught him, and carried it out to our woods and turned him loose. End of that!

I agree with CAG. I was once told that a good way to tell if a snake is poisonous is by a heart shaped head, or as CAG put it an arrow point shape.
Grumppsw374 has the right idea😆

It's all in the eyes. Round, like humans, not poisonous. Oblong, egg shaped, poisonous. In FL last winter, had one under the hood of my. Greyhawk. Never found it.....lol.

See, this is exactly what I said in another post. No one reads anything after the original OPs post and the one right before what they posted. Most all of this has been covered in previous posts. So we get three pages of the same stuff over and over

The head suggests a non poisonous snake. The markings could be that of a bull snake although the bull snakes we have in south Texas generally have brighter markings. A coach whip also cones to mind. I have always been surprised to learn that snakes in the wild seldom look like the ones at the zoo.
