Interesting. Seems like going backwards. The different sizes were intended to prevent exactly what happened to your daughter.

The nozzle is bigger on the diesel pump but if someone tries really hard the nozzle will fit. I have seen many gasoline vehicles that people have tried to run on diesel. It usually means a tow to the garage for a fuel drain and refill and in some cases some new catalytic converters.

Gas in diesel is a bit more common with the gasoline nozzle being smaller than the diesel nozzle. A trick that can work while on the road is to disconnect the line in the engine bay from the in-tank fuel pump, extend the line into a jug(s), and jumper the fuel pump relay to empty the tank. The in-tank pump will leave a bit of a heel of incorrect fuel, but a refilled tank dilutes that out to a point that it is not a concern.

Be careful when using the high volume truck nozzles. I know that on Sprinter vans the high volume filling can cause a spike in pressure within the tank when the tank fill tube gets submerged before the auto cut-off shuts off the flow. That spike of pressure has been known to blow off vent tubes. I don't know if that applies to other brands, but it is something to keep in mind.

If they don't have RV lanes I always fill up in the truck section. Never have a problem easy to get in and out and I know when I see a Pilot, Loves et al I can fit in and not block traffic trying to get to a pump.

I can't tell a difference in the size of the nozzles for the gasoline pumps and the auto diesel pumps.

Next time you are at the pump with both pumps pick up the diesel nozzle and put it in your gaser you will see that it does fit but is a larger diameter.

There is a slight difference in size between gas and diesel nozzles at the auto fill islands. However, if you go to the truck lanes, there is a big difference in size there. I have had no problem filling up my Dodge Ram 2500 diesel in the truck lanes.

My only experience with the diesel pumps is filling up jugs with fuel for my shop heater. I guess the difference in size isn't great enough for me to notice.

If the slight difference in size isn't enough to prevent the diesel nozzle from being inserted into the gasoline neck, then what is the point?

It is my understanding that all the diesel pumps have the larger size nozzles. I believe the truck lanes may have a higher flow rate. So correct me if I'm wrong I would believe if you want to fuel up with diesel you could use the truck lanes the nozzle should fit. However I would think you'd want to be towing a camper or something to fit in otherwise I bet you'd get dirty looks.

Wikipedia:

"The nozzle on diesel pumps is supposed to be larger so that it cannot fit into the fillpipe on a vehicle tank designed for gasoline. However, the larger diameter diesel nozzles are not an actual requirement, and many diesel pumps at auto islands have been fitted with standard gasoline nozzles."

Same story as "certified106" above. I try to always use the truck lanes when fueling. They are faster and safer than trying to sneak my rig into a car gas/diesel lane. Since I am only getting around 30 or so gallons, I'm in and out quick and don't hold up the lane. If I have to go inside to pay, then my wife will go in so I'm not holding someone else up. One extra rule: if the kids need to get out and eat, drink, pee, etc, then they can WAIT until we are away from the fuel dock and parked safely elsewhere. The truck lanes are no place for kids to be running around.
