Can mobile tech mount a tire on a rim?

Did a few searches and plenty of info on spare tires, but what I wanted to find out is if the mobile techs can remove a flat tire and mount a new tire? I carry a spare front tire, but no rim. Wondering if I need to buy a rim as my expectations for mobile repair are too high. I'm expecting they come out, jack RV up, pull flat off RV, remove tire from rim, put my spare on the rim, and reverse process.

Due to all the stories on mobile tech (granted you usually only hear the bad ones) if I shouldn't just buy a rim and carry a jack too.

I worked in a gas station for a while in my youth and putting a tire on a rim without proper equipment is possible but for the cost and weight a rimmed spare just makes more sense. How many hours or more likely days are you willing to wait for someone who can do it to show up?

Plus, how many of the mobile medics would be able and willing to do it?

I would not even call a mobile tech for that job.

A tire service, with a specific question asked, is he prepared to de-mount and re-mount a tire on site?

I have had the same thing happen years back and it went well.

Sorry, more specifically call road side assistance and whoever they send out is capable to do this work. I have Good Sam, but never used them (and hopefully never will)

Luckily flat tires only happen when a mobile tech is near by and during their business hours. If that were not the case it would be a long time to get service in the middle of nowhere. There are so many places that are 60-100 miles between fuel stations, could be 200 miles between mobile techs.

Plus, I wonder how many rims are ruined by not noticing that flat and dragging it on the pavement for a couple miles, but if the op had a MH, a front tire would be noticeable.

That said, having an extra tire is not a bad idea as a second spare. My brother is a mobile tech, he mounts tires all the time by hand and a couple of the right tools. Either way, first spare would get you to the next town to get it mounted to replace the original.

In my case I did not have a 2nd tire. The tire guy that GSR sent mounted my spare, then drove back to his shop and got me a spare so I could continue on our trip.
All the tire work was done on the side of the road with old fashioned tire tools.

A mobile Tire service tech surely can! We had two tires replaced on our trailer in Weatheford OK while we were in the RV park. The pulled the tires and rims off the trailer and removed the tires the old'fashioned way with a couple of tire irons and a sledge to break the bead. He had the new ones on and mounted in about 90 minutes.

I was at a Wisconsin campground last year and a tire store sent a truck out and replaced all the tires on the motorhome

Due to our second tire failure in about 2 hrs we had no spare. Roadside was requested and informed of our situation and tire size we needed. The guy that came to the rescue had everything he needed to dismount the bad tire and mount a new one. He arrived with 2 or 3 tires of different brands but the correct size. One of them was the highly touted G’yesr G614 which I eagerly selected. Gun-shy after the 2 tire failures and a now darkening Sunday evening I asked him if his shop could sell me 3 more 614’s and he followed us to the shop where we left the 5th and headed to the house (only 40-ish miles remaining). Got the call Monday afternoon that they were done, I returned, paid the bill and headed home.

Moral of the story, get good tires (G614 or G’yesr Endurance (IMHO)), get a TPMS (yes, I had one) and carry at least 1 mounted spare.

PS, the failed tires were TowMax.

Not sure if I’m answering your question, but there are mobile tire changers. I recently watched a guy have all four of his tires changed on his pickup in a driveway. A van showed up and jacked his truck up and removed each wheel one at a time. The van had machines inside to change the tires and balance the wheels.

Thanks for the info. I have a spare tire as one front went flat. It would hold enough air to get me to the next destination and then I just had both fronts replaced so they were the same age/wear. I held on to the one tire that was still good and keep that under the bed. I just started wondering if I needed a rim or a mobile tech could take the old tire off and put the spare on a rim on the side of the road.

If it were me, I’d have a complete spare (tire mounted to wheel) ready to go. It’s more convenient and not much money to just get another wheel to mount your extra tire on before you need it.

Agree. That's going to be a problem unless you can put a carrier in the rear hitch that will accommodate two rims and tires. But that sounds unwieldy.

They are keeping the extra tire under the bed now. So I figured a complete spare would fit there too?

Maybe I am mistaken, but the poster said he had a spare front tire but no rim. I'm thinking if he had a spare front tire with a rim, things may be easier to change by himself.

You’re right that was said. But I figured the Greyhawk was like any other dually vehicle where the tire and wheel size is the same front and rear. I could be wrong.

I carry mounted spares, all aired up to full pressure and have tools and a jack. Changing a mounted tire is easy.

When going on vacation we caravan with several vehicles, pulling trailers and boats. One year my son didn't have a spare anything, and the tire exploded on the interstate on a Sunday evening.

We were blessed in that a State Trooper stopped to help. Not a single tire guy awake. He found a gas station guy he knew and he came and got the blown tire and took it back to his gas station. All he had in that size was an old used tire. It got us to the nearest WalMart, who had tires and mounted them for us.

If you have room for a tire, you have room for a mounted tire. Maybe a mobile tire dealer can help you, but maybe there aren't any where you are. If my son had the spare we would have been on our way in half an hour. As it was it took 4 hours and the service call and everything cost hundreds.
