Carrying a scooter behind trailer

Hi all, Happy New Year!

Can I get opinions on carrying a small scooter (290 lb max) off the rear of a JayFlight 27RLS? Has anyone done this or something close?

Considering getting a small campground scoot. Could put it in the truck bed (Ram 2500) but that's usually pretty full with other stuff.

My 2015 27RLS JayFlight had an option for a rear trailer hitch. I didn't order that option, but the frame does have the brackets to bolt one on. If your JayFlight has the hitch or brackets on the frame, you may be able to buy and bolt on a hitch/carrier to carry the scooter. I wouldn't trust the trailer rear bumper for that unless it was significantly reinforced.

Having that much additional weight that far back could make sway an issue. There's no way to know for sure about that until you try it.

I can't help you with it being on the back of the trailer, but a buddy at work put a receiver hitch on the front of his Ram and carries his scooter there. Might be an alternative for you??

I take it that front carrier was a total custom thing?

It's not custom. Just a standard front receiver hitch and he purchased a motorcycle holder for it. It slides into the receiver and has a ramp. He drives it on to the ramp, folds up ramp and off he goes. I'd send a pic, but I'm not at the house. I know you can pull up pics on Google.

The front hitch is an idea I just had to put on my TT. I was going to use it for my little generator, but a little scooter or runabout sounds like a better plan. Thanks, fellers!

Bookemdanno - Yes, I see that and I think that's what I'm going to do.

It's just a little Honda PCX150, under 300lb wet.

And I did check, my 27RLS does have 2 brackets to attach a hitch. Interesting.

Is it for a hitch or the cargo carrier? There is a big difference.

I just assumed a trailer hitch was the way a cargo carrier would be attached to the back of the trailer? Cargo carrier or little scooter carrier?

There are many cargo carriers that do attach to a trailer hitch, but not all cargo carriers are attached using a trailer hitch. I believe Grumpy was cautioning about brackets that might be for a light duty cargo carrier that trailer manufacturers offer.

IIRC, my trailer came with a catalog of options that I could buy and that catalog included a trailer hitch that bolted to the frame of my trailer. I don't recall a light duty cargo carrier being offered. To be sure, by using the trailer vin#, it should be easy for Jayco to confirm that frame brackets are for a bolt-on trailer hitch.

Make sure you verify the CC capacity of the hitch and carrier.

Your scooter will be pushing the limits of the bolt on one I have.
