CB Radio Question

Back in the 1970's I used a cb radio in my vehicle and found it very helpful. But, I haven't had one for years. Since I've been travelling with my fifth wheel for the past 3 years, I keep thinking that maybe I might get one to put in my tow vehicle. Are any of you using one and if so, do you feel that it is worth while?

I had one in my truck about 6 years ago but took it out as my kids got older. I found CB to be useless. There were too many arguments and cuss words on the air to make it worth listening to.

Like Iraqvet. I took mine out due to cussing and ridiculous arguments. I do however carry a handheld portable in case of emergency or to check with truckers on road delays.

Happy RVing,
Jeff

It's a totally different world out there anymore............And a NEW breed of truckers than the old days.

I have one setup on CH19 under my truck seat. Have the squelch turned up all the way so the only thing I hear on it is very close to me.

I still find it useful to listen to the truckers and find the road hazards in the nearby vicinity. Never talk on it - just listen...

I don't think I have ever heard another RV'er on it. Been in my truck since 2009.

We use cell phone and the FRS radios for keeping in touch around the camp grounds...

I also tried another one a few years ago. The only time it was useful was when there was bad weather or road hazards. Most of the time there was so much arguing and bad language I would just turn it off.

BUT, in CA they are still useful, especially if you are pulling a trailer. The CA 55mph speed limit for vehicles with trailers means that truckers use the CB as in the old days, warning of speed traps.

One other place where CB is still used is in some rural areas. You can find some small communities who use it like a party phone line.

When we wanted to travel in a group we got GMRS or FMRS radios. Now days we just do group text messages.

I used to have one too but could not use it with DW and any kids in the car. We are starting to travel quite a bit and I am going to take a Ham radio class and purchase a portable ham for emergencies.

This may be a bit too geeky for some[emoji851]. I too was a C.B.er for quite some time. My Dad got me into it when I was very young.

Finally about 3 years ago I took my amateur license exam. Now I carry a 2 meter hand held in the tow vehicle for emergency and you don't have to listen to the foul language. There is always a repeater with someone monitoring in the area.

I plan on installing a radio in the 5th wheel eventually for those rainy day campouts.
