Change of Plans

Luckily no one was hurt. Happened in front of Traverse City State Park, Michigan. Driver came across road and almost hit us head on. Witnesses said he was texting. Now I am dealing with insurance company! Truck was totaled, they want me to get a quote on trailer. Happened 9/15/20.

Man, that sucks. Glad no one was hurt Hopefully you're not getting jammed up too much dealing with Michigan's no-fault insurance.

Wow! I'm so glad to hear no one was hurt. But what a hassle now. It sounds like the driver took off?

First and foremost thing I would do is get legal representation. A lawyer will make sure you are protected from the other guy's insurance company. Speaking from recent experience. The trailer looks totaled as well.

Very sobering to see stuff like this. It illustrates the importance of having a properly matched and set up rig for those sudden and dynamic maneuvers.

Aside from the accident and damage, that is one hell of an awesome set-up you have/had. Hopefully you can get it all back.

glad everyone is safe. I'm not sure how the trailer isn't totaled... i would think that type of impact would break so many things loose in the trailer.

We have no-fault insurance here in Michigan (dumbest concept ever). So the OP has to deal with their insurance carrier, not the other guys company.

I thought they just did away with no-fault in MI?

Crazy. We almost got hit head on in front of a Wyoming state park waiting to turn left. Was so bad the driver found us and came to apologize/explain. You are very lucky. Hope the financial side of this works out on the truck/trailer.

Glad nobody was hurt. It was good there were witnesses to the texting, hope that gets on record? Did the other driver admit to fault or texting or?

Glad everyone is OK.

So now I am dealing with my own insurance. They were fair on the truck, but they are not doing so well with the trailer. The driver was cited, he had to cross two lanes to hit me. I went over the curb to avoid a head-on. Thanks for the well wishes!

So sorry, but glad no one was injured. The insurance process is never fun, but you can’t replace family.

I dealt with insurance on a total loss for a travel trailer. They too tried to lowball me. Go online and find 3-5 examples of the same trailer you had, and the price they are going for in your general area/state/country. Pick the higher priced ones of course, and send the links in an email to your adjustor to show them comparable value and what cost it would be to replace what you had. That worked for me.

Every time I start my truck and car, I go through the hassle of making sure the dash cam is running in hopes of never having to show the recordings. It's very cheap insurance. So glad you guys are safe. Material things will get replaced albeit a hassle.

Wow, I'm glad everyone was ok. By the look of it, you almost weren't. Things can be replaced, people can't.

I agree with Skybound and have had similar instances with my insurance claims. Not only examples, but verify exact model and any options. Even legitimate upgrades should count. I had Correct Track added to one of my trailers, and after some Negotiating (read me arguing with them), they added that to the total. I also had a king bed option that was an "add" for my trailer that was covered.

My quote for the trailer would be "It is obviously totaled", but I know they are just doing the cheap COVID thing. They don't want to put adjusters in the field during the pandemic for fear of getting them or the insured sick. Liability is what they do.

I also disagreed with them finding a comp in Salt Lake City and using that against me as a lower priced option. In my response, I added gas, mileage and hotel stays to drive to and retrieve that one. They dropped it as a comp.

PS Your trailer picture should be the answer to every thread asking, if the wife and kids can ride in the trailer....
