Changing to a digital thermostat - which one should I get?

I want to change out the cheaper analog thermostat for a digital one that will hold the temp better in the trailer. I've read a couple of posts about the Hunter thermostats and also about the Colemans. The Coleman is obviously more expensive, but it has the two speed fan switch built in, which is definitely something that I want to keep.

For those of you who have switched, what do you think? Who has wired in a switch on the Hunter, and how did you do it? I have no issues running wires, but my soldering skills are pretty poor............

Thanks,

- Steve

I swapped my thermostat with a Honeywell RTH111B Vertical Digital Manual Thermostat (http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-RTH1...4279739&sr=8-9).

Nothing fancy, just simple thermostat. Same ones I put in my house actually. My heater in the camper does not have different fan speeds so I just needed something simple and works.

I've done the programmable Hunter on our last 2 trailers. One of the best mods I did. Even with the 2 speed fan switch (from Radio Shack) it's very easy to do. Here's some links in case you do't have them:

I did the same thing on a previous camper.

The Hunter worked great and was inexpensive.

I removed it and sold it to a buddy when I traded in the RV. My current camper came with a Duotherm digital themostat.

My trailer has one speed on heat, but 2 on the AC. Is there a thermostat out there that will run the AC on low, but if it gets too warm, switch it to high? Auto control of fan speed based on say 10 degrees over set temp? That would be sweet.....

I'd also hope to have such an animal that runs on batteries or has very low DC draw when running on batteries/boondocking.....

Can you guys tell the difference from high to low? Maybe mine is stuck on high, but I just can't tell ANY difference so I just hard wired it to high. With the quick cool vents closed and the ducted system, it is really quiet anyway.

I found this thread over @ rv.net where they found a cheap, 2 state thermostat on ebay. However, right now they are all $60+ on ebay.

Sounds like a great solution for me, but knowing that people got them for $10-15 makes me cringe to spend $60

Chak, try Amazon... they have them ranging from around $20 on up. This is just one but it's just an example so don't hold me to it:

I can't tell enough difference between high and low to worry about losing low. I did, however, replace my thermostats with the Coleman brand (I don't want to worry about warranty issues). They were more expensive yes, but operate on 12v.

They have been working full time since August 2010.

Once you try that Barker jack out, you'll wonder how you ever managed without it.

Well today, I went ahead and installed a Hunter RTH111B thermostat in my TT. Using the most excellent wiring diagrams found here (http://www.jaycoowners.com/showthread.php?t=3055), I added a SPDT micro switch to retain the High/Low fan controls). It doesn't look as good as I had hoped due to the residual hole from the Coleman but it works really nice.

I bet you will come up with some sort of cosmetic fix for that

I'm going to try, Bob. Little stuff like that drives me nuts and I, in turn, drive the DW nuts so she will tell me to fix it. Haha

I installed my Hunter (with switch for high/low) a couple of weeks ago and it works perfectly! The wiring diagrams found here were very helpful.

I'll take some pictures in a couple of weeks when I pull the trailer out again. I'm very pleased, and it is a hard mod to beat for $25.

Also got my Barker installed... it is AWESOME! Should have bought it the day I bought the trailer.
