Check Your Lug Nuts!

Make sure they're torqued to the proper value---not too tight or too loose.

Saw this today at our local Jayco dealer. All 5 wheel lugs were sheared off. The wheel also hit the rear step assembly forcing it off-center about 8-10 inches.

Can you imagine following this trailer when the tire came loose?

Thank you for the reminder! I trusted my dealer. Maybe I should double check them myself, with a torque wrench!

Ouch! This is one of the reasons I carry a torque wrench and regularly check the lug nuts, especially on longer trips.

What is the torque spec? Sorry, I don’t have my owners manual handy.

I believe for most 14"-16" wheels it's in the 90-120 ft. lb. range. I have 15", 5-lug steel wheels and use 100 ft. lb.

Did a nice number on the skirting, too. Imagine the noise if you were right next to it when it happened, yikes!

I better start looking for a torque wrench. Where do others find the best deal on this?

Since this is not engine building precision I bought a harbor freight 1/2 drive torque wrench for wheel studs. It has worked great for a long time now.

X2 on the Harbor Freight torque wrench. I bought mine on sale a couple of years ago for $25 and it's pretty accurate. It's the click type and I torque my lugs to 100 ft lbs.

Harbor Freight has the Pittsburgh 1/2 inch torque wrenches on sale now for $19.99.

I don't have to imagine it. Several years ago, a friend and I were on the 91 in CA near the Riverside and Corona city limits when the boat trailer ahead of us lost a wheel. We were hemmed in by traffic with nowhere to go but the shoulder and, of course, the wheel that came off was on the right side. Fortunately, we were far enough back to have plenty of time to stop and the wheel went off onto the shoulder before it could reach us.

Wow, glad it missed you! A 50-75 lb. wheel and tire barreling towards your windshield at freeway speeds is not a good thing

Fortunately, traffic was running at, maybe, 40-45 mph (there is the reason I call the 91 near I-15 "The 91 Parking Lot") and the tire mostly just rolled with minimal bouncing. Still, had it hit us, it would have done a number on my little F150 Screw.

That's one heck of a price! These same torque wrenches sell under a number of different brand names for a lot more on eBay and Amazon. They may not have the accuracy of a Snap-On, but they're certainly accurate enough to torque lug nuts on a trailer.

I picked up the HF wrench today too for $11.99 and a 13/16 socket for my 212 QBW. Anyone know if that is the correct socket size?

Yep, that’s it.

For my 2013 White Hawk, the Dexter manual (3500lb) says torque to 60 lbs, then to 70 lbs, with max torque 75lbs.

So if accurate, 100lbs is way too much.

I'm rather surprised to see people writing "Oh, I better start checking my lug nuts"...

Like you didn't already??

Another yes for the Harbor Freight torque wrench. Bought one YEARS ago, 25-30, and it finally gave out about two years ago. HF replaced it no questions asked...

About five years ago, heading north on 395 out of Reno. A blazer about a quarter mile ahead of us was exiting the freeway at I believe Red Rock. The rear drivers wheel came off and that stinking tire had to travel at least a half a mile, staying on the north side, then crossing the two lanes going into the median, eventually crossing the southbound lanes and disappearing down the shoulder. So glad no one was hurt but honestly it was one of the funniest happenings I have ever seen. Patti and I kept wondering when it would stop its trip...
