Choosing Your Off-Grid Refrigerator

There have been a lot of posts regarding RV fridges... which ones are good for regular RVing (shore power hookups) vs Dry-Camping fridges. The PRO's/CON's. Energy Hogs. This post is primarily for those serious about Dry-Camping options. RV mfr's are not really interested in Dry-Camping options and the LP model fridge does get the job done. BUT what about those that want a well insulated electric (low voltage) fridge. One designed for Off-Grid use.... DRY-CAMPING. I get a magazine called Home Power and in an article they cover the "Off-Grid" group.

I might be missing something here, but don't think you can beat the fridge on LP for off-grid or boondocking.

I lived off grid in a remote house for a few years, and had a full size LP fridge. It worked great. I cant see a 12 volt being feasible for any length of time, those batteries would have to be charged, and it would take an expensive solar setup to run it. A bottle of propane lasts a long time, all there is a small flame, and for a few bucks to fill.

I also had gas lights, I kept a few of them for power outages since I got on the grid.
