Coleman Stove refurbished

About 30 years ago my dad gave me his old Coleman white gas stove and it's been in use for the last 30 years and hasn't missed a beat. I thought I'd give a little freshening as it was beat up with the paint chipping, etc. I didn't do anything with the grill or the gas generator but try and remove some of the rust. The stove functions normally with all original parts with the exception of the gas cap on the tank and the plunger. Dad couldn't remember what year he bought it but I have it dated between 1960 and early 1962. In 1960 they switched from the gold tank to the red and in 1961 they came out with the leveling feet which this stove has. I was able to save the original Coleman decal. Like an idiot I forgot to take any before pictures.

Looks great, how did you get it clean? I have a Coleman stove, the one with the little one-pound propane tanks, and it's about 8 years old. It's all greasy and grimy. Tips?

Thanks!

I have 4 Coleman stoves. The one I use the most I believe is stamped 1969.

To clean mine I use 3M spray citrus cleaner. It is awesome, but expensive.

I used oven cleaner to degrease mine but beware because it took some of the paint off and I'm glad it did since I repainted it, Lol.

Looks really good nice job.
I have the one my Grandfather cooked on when they used to go campin. I thought about trying to clean it up but wasn't sure how to go about it since it has some surface rust. Then I thought maybe I should leave it as is because it has character. I did buy the piece so I could use propane bottles like I use for the lantern so I wouldn't have to worry about carrying around a 2nd fuel supply. I haven't used it in years since I bought one of those 3 burner cookers so it just sits amongst some other campin stuff in the basement.

I bought the propane conversion for our Coleman stove. All of the original parts are still in the stove. The stove now waits in the boot of the TT for the next time it is called into service. Maybe I should clean it up like you did.

If I ever see one of those I’ll buy it in a heartbeat. Such cool old stoves. I also really like the dual fuel Coleman lanterns. Nice work on the restore TC

I still have my old 3 burner from tent days. I converted it to propane long ago but did strip and repaint it. It's still going strong for over 40 years.

Thanks for all the compliments. These Coleman "suitcase stoves" are timeless and a testament to American manufacturing back in the day. I e-mailed the pics to my 90 year old father and called him later that evening and he was kind of choked up about it. Makes a guy feel good.

Thanks. I used Rustoleum Hunter Green for the box, Rustoleum Deep Red for the tank and Rustoleum Aluminum for the wind flaps.

Great job! It's like they never die. I've seen a lot of cheapo grills in the junk heap at campgrounds, but never a Coleman. That says a lot about them.

I'll have to show this thread to my wife. She thinks I'm a nutcase about these stoves. I have the first one I bought new in 1969 and in the past few years I've been picking them up at garage sales and rehabing them so we always have two with us on any trip. Like someone above said, I give the rest to the kids and grandkids. If you can find the original stand that Coleman supplied for these stoves you'll be in high cotton!
I have a large electric oven that I use for powder coating and that's my preferred way to do the tank. Rusto Hunter Green is the way to go for that cabinet match. There's a guy online that has all the leather, rubber and other parts that fail from time to time, including the generators. Don't forget to put a little sewing machine oil in the pump!

I'd like to find one myself. Do I need it? Probably not but they just don't build quality like that anymore.

I use gun oil for the pump and this last one has been in service for the last 10 years!

Couldn't agree more! I have an old Coleman white gas lantern that I'm gonna do next. I was going through some stuff and found that I have 2 brand new mantles for it still in the package.
