coupler failure

I love my Jay Feather 26 but had a problem in Colorado in Sept. We traveled from Montrose to Gunnison heading home to Texas. Pulled over in Gunnison and noticed the front of the trailer was almost on the ground. The coupler had almost completely torn loose from the tongue frame and was tilted down about 45 degrees. On one side the weld was broken and part of it was rusted so it had been cracked for a while. The other side the metal on the C channel frame was torn. All that was left holding the coupler was the weld across the top. I have a new coupler welded on at a welding shop in Gunnison. The owner said it was a very bad design and I agree. He welded in some square tube inside the C channel about 18" back and welded on a new heavier coupler. It cost me $287.00 which I didn't think was bad for two guys working 3 hours and included the cost of the coupler. We had just driven through some narrow windy mountain roads and thank God I noticed the problem before we got back on the road. I intend to contact Jayco on this. Anyone else have or know about this problem?

Welcome to the forum.

I've never heard of that happening, especially so dramatically. Hope someone can shine some light on the subject. Keep us informed.

New trailer or old one? Sounds like a bad day at the frame factory and random quality control issue. I haven't heard of it either.

Glad you spotted it before it completely broke off.

Any pictures?

Welcome to the forum.

And thank goodness you spotted it when you did! As the others have said, this is the first time I've heard of this problem. Thank you for bringing it to the attention of others.
