Crap---hail totaled my camper---now what do I do?

We had a hail storm here on April 10. It dented the heck out of my 184BH, put a dent in the antenna, and marked up the vent cover over the potty. Purely cosmetic stuff. We went back and forth about whether to have it looked at by adjuster. Finally decided to do so.

News came back---they totaled it. We bought it last spring and only got to camp in it a couple times. Had a fantastic fan installed at dealership and bought a cover.

Here are my options---they will give me $11,600 and take the camper. I would pay off my loan ($9000) and have some money for a down payment. Problem---the nearest 184BH is in Des Moines----not terribly far---but I'm getting alittle nervous about buying another one----you know how it it---one camper was made on Tues and is perfect--the next was made on Friday afternoon at quitting time---not so perfect!

The other option the adjuster mentioned was they would pay the bank $5100 and I would continue to pay on the balance. BUT----this is all up to the bank. If they don't want to be co-owners of a salvaged camper--they can say no deal. Now I'm desperate---I want my camper---this camper that I know and love. So I could offer to pay the other $4000 off now and it's nobody's worry but mine.

B U T----------------

If I do that----is my Jayco warranty void? If something breaks inside will they say no way------because it's a salvaged/totaled camper. I'm guessing it won't be covered????

Any thoughts or suggestions? Yesterday, after I got done crying----we went to the Jayco dealer and today to a dealer who shall remain nameless. Last night I was up till 5 am-----scouring the Internet for other light weight campers----there's just nothing I like as well as what I have!

Help---------- The conference call between the insurance company, bank and myself is supposed to be tomorrow.

I don't know what to tell you, we had some hail damage but not to that extent. I don't know where this particular model is made. We were at the factory last year to see the assembly of Pinnacle trailers. It appears the components could be made any time of the week as well as the appliances. If it were me (I'm particular) take the deal and buy the new camper. I think if you keep it every time you look at it your tummy will turn. Bad luck but hail damage goes with the aluminum skin on campers.

I would take the money and get a new unit. The salvage title will be with that unit for the rest of it's life. When you go to sell it or trade it in the salvage title will come into play again.

How would Jayco know your rig is totaled they dont look at stuff like that.. they process hundreds if not thousands of claims a day.. just dont try to get them to fix any of the hail damage under warranty..

I guess I would take the deal and then purchase it as salvage from the insurance company :-)
Otherwise, I would only take the deal if my other stuff was on warranty still.

If the OP had more equity in it, it might be beneficial to take the check for the totaled trailer, buy it back from the insurance company as salvage, and put new skin on it. Considering he is only going to end up with a couple of grand, in my opinion, trying to salvage and rebuild it wouldn't be worth it. I would put the $2000 down on a new unit with new warranty and go camping. JMHO

Well, since the damage is cosmetic and fixable I would be more inclined to keep the trailer and have the trailer half payed for. Just make sure there are no leaks in the trailer. Take your time and find a shop to fix it. It would take me a long time to save up 5 grand. Boat repair places could give you a better deal during the coming winter and in the mean time you have a great conversation starter with the person your camping next to. I totally understand the reason why others have suggested going the other route and for them that's the right thing to do. Good luck with your decision.

Another thing to consider is that when you go to sell or trade the trailer, and everyone eventually will, it's going to be hard to unload a trailer with a salvage title to a dealer as trade or to an individual. You also need to know if a salvaged trailer is insurable.

pugmom-- I did a little checking on 2013 pricing and found that new 184 bh msrp are listed between 12k & 14500 depending on options. If you paid 14k MSRP less the 30% discount (you should be able to get) you would be at 9800 less the 2600 you have left over you would only owe 7200 ( PLUS ANY TAXES). You may want to consider a new rig. Just my $.02 Larry

The two options are tempting, but to answer Bob Landry's question, the trailer is insurable, but not for physical damage if you do not fix the damage caused by hail and the insurance company will not pay any claims for damage to the trailer in the future.
Personaly I would off load the trailer and find a new one. I realize and understand that you like/love the unit you have. If was my trailer and I had the two options, I would be at a dealer finding a new trailer.
Good Luck and let us know the outcome.

Well, had my little conference call--now have to cuss and discuss with hubby (who flew to Florida today on business)!

I have to admit I'm leaning toward keeping it---why? Cuz ending up only paying $5000 for a 2012 Jayco is pretty tempting. It's going to be parked in a park on the Missouri River 12 months a year (except for the times we decide to go somewhere.) Considering I'm in Nebraska and likely to get hail again or any number of mishaps (tree limbs, kids bikes, baseballs)---the "Dimples" are not all that troubling.

My biggest concern is will I still have my second year of warrenty coverage on the stuff not hail related? I didn't get to camp that much to try everything good. As one poster asked "how would Jayco know"? Cuz of our freakin stupidity and need to be honest---I sent them an email asking--and the email asked for my name, vin number, etc. At this point, I wish I'd called NO ONE! I'm not going to fix it--cause they quoted $6100--I'd end up paying more than I bought the camper for. Although I could just fix the front panel--the side and back are not noticeable.

We spent the weekend looking----in person and on Internet. I did find 2013 Winnebago Minnie pull behind that looks interesting.

Thanks for your help---I keep you posted

Why wouldn't it work like auto insurance? They offered you $11,600 to total it. Why would you take $5100 and have to pay the other $4000 off yourself? Why not counter offer at say $10,600 and you keep the trailer as long as it is useable for you. This will pay off the loan, give a few bucks for repairs and you can still sell it cheap in a few years to buy a new one if you want. I definitely would not take the $5100 offer!

I don't know how vehicle title works in the USA, but here is what I did here in Ontario for my previous car. It got hail damaged pretty bad. I liked the car, and granted it was not brand new. I did NOT put in an insurance claim, and kept the car, dimples and all. In my mind, insurance claims on stuff like that are never in your favor, and you're right, there will likely be another hail storm in your future. I know it hurts every time you look at it, but I found over time it's less bothersome. My vote is to keep it and stay away from the insurance claim. I also think Jayco won't refuse future warranty claims on anything unrelated to the hail dimples themselves.

BTW, the dent in the antenna will not affect how it works for TV reception.

What a day---on the phone! First of all ---kudos to Gail at the Jayco offices! She got my e-mail this morning (about warranty coverage) ---called me and worked till she had a definitive answer. My camper would no longer be covered under warranty with a salvaged title. So long story short---I'm NOT keeping the camper.

It will take my local dealer 8 or more weeks to get the 2014 184BH. So not sure what I'll do next. I do have my 1988 Fiberglass camper (interior 10 x 6) electric only, porta potty, cold water I can use. It's darn cute, but too small for hubby.

Back to my search------

Well, the decision has been made! Decided to get a new camper! Today we brought home a 2013 Winnebago Minnie 2101FBS. Bright yellow! We are thrilled.

Thank you to the people on this forum who have helped me this past year. I'm now a woman without a forum--actually Winnebago has a forum, but this model is new this year, so not many owners on there---yet!

Happy Camping!
