CSA approval

We purchased our unit 2 years ago in the US and have just found out that we do not have a CSA approval sticker on our unit and after contacting the manufacturer we just found out that our unit was not built for the Canadian Market.
Our local dealer will not service our unit for any electrical or propane issues and we cannot sell this unit either.
Has anyone ever had to deal with this issue and if so are there any solutions.
We are not pleased but as they say buyer beware.

I have dealt with this for manufacturing equipment. I suspect TT certification will be similar. You can have a certification inspection done by CSA. The first step is they will assess whether anything is non-compliant, and give you a list of what needs to be changed. You then have a qualified person make the changes. Upon completion CSA will re-inspect, and if found to be compliant, they will attach the all important CSA certification sticker. Of course, there are cost to doing this, but it will untie your hands. If I remember correctly, the CSA fees were on the order of a few hundred dollars, but don't quote me on that.

P.S. -- I would add, that required changes (if any) are typically minor in nature. More nit-picky than anything.

What does that mean

Not being from Ontario, does that mean you can't license/ register it?

For the uninformed on this subject like me, just what is different about a trailer with CSA standards? I have seen that option on Jayco`s build and price website but never knew what the difference was.

My buddy bought his trailer in the States and I think he had a gas fitter check over the system and put the CSA decal on the trailer and good to go.

In the USA, you have Underwriters Lab (UL) standards, and in Canada we have Canadian Standards Association (CSA). There have been attempts to harmonize the standards, they are quite similar. They apply to things like electrical wiring, plumbing and propane. These quasi-government organizations do periodically send inspectors to a manufacturing facility to ensure products intended for their market are compliant. The inspector will look at work in progress, and the paperwork records of other builds in order to grant the facility the right to apply the certification sticker to finished product. The manufacturer pays an annual fee to UL or CSA for this. Certification after manufacture is also possible, as mentioned in other posts. Again, I don't have specific experience with the TT situation, but generally this is how it works.

About licensing the trailer, my understanding is, the certification does not say if it's road worthy or not, so the Ministry of Transport doesn't care. The certification would apply in the same way household appliances are affected. I'm sure a person's insurance company would care about it.

Is there anything in the CSA standards that would preclude also having UL standards and visa versa? In other words, can a TT comply with both standards? If you pay for the CSA standard option on a Jayco do you still get the UL standard?

This is frequently done by manufacturers, where both certifications are applied to all the production run. Perhaps Jayco considers the Canadian market to be too small for them to justify this approach for them. Within Canada, there is much grumbling about CSA being just a useless "rubber stamp" of UL certified product, and they charge too much for that "rubber stamp".

Just another big government revenue stream. If I was looking to buy your trailer I wouldn't give a rip about the CSA sticker. How many of you search for the UL sticker on everything you buy? Probably not many.

I was involved in this same issue with manufactured products before I retired. The problem with a CSA inspector actually approving a product is also dependent on all of the component parts in the product also having CSA approval. This could include all of the appliances and electrical devices. Assuming everything used to build the trailer has CSA labels, the inspector could issue a CSA approval, but he doesn't have to and he is expensive. And you pay him to show up even if he doesn't approve.

This is not a good situation.

Attached is a photo of a dual certification label. It has "C" on the left for Canada, and "US" on the right for USA. The straight CSA label has a stylized CSA lettering. It's up to the manufacturer if they want dual or just UL or just CSA. Their choice will depend which approach is justified (think cost) by their sales volume in each market.

As edatlanta says, each sub-assembly is part of the mix. I also agree with mcfarmall that most people don't care if your TT has the blessing of CSA. The insurance companies and licensed trades people will be the ones you have to convince that all is okay.

I stopped by a local RV show this weekend. Looked at a couple of the new 2012 Jaycos and it caught my eye there was a Canadian flag sticker near the door down low. Wonder if those were dual certified? I didnt happen to look at the other stickers. I am pretty far down south so I thought that was interesting.

you can still sell your unit , there is no law saying you cant. also you could have a tsa guy do a propane test and he will tag it, and a hydro special inspection and he or she will tag that

Your dealer is blowing smoke at you because you did not buy from him... Lots and lots buy them in the USA and bring them back to Canada... I know someone that does that every year then sells it when they get home...
IF you are in the GTA I know of a dealer near there that I am sure will service your rig for you... He writes the Hitch hints column in the Cdn RV magazine...

The Cdn flag on a Jayco means it was built to Cdn standards... when I bought mine I mistook it for meaning made in Canada

Yes, and for those who are curious, you will also see the 3 inch round CSA label on the outside near the entrance door. On the label is a registry number unique to a particular model series. This label is for the whole TT and looks different than my earlier photo of a component level cert. My TT is in storage so I don't have a photo of the outside label.
