Damage to RV while in paid storage

Has anyone had damage done to your rig while in paid storage? Our RV awning back arm was bent and the screws ripped loose when we went to pick it up for a weekend camping outing, We had just been to the unit four days prior as we took it in for an oil change. The storage facility is pussy footing around with us when we asked if they could look at the video footage they first said they could show us then they said they could not. We filed a police report and notified our insurance company.

What the video probably shows is either one of the employees moving another rig and it hit yours, or another owner hitting your rig when he moved it. Their obviously hiding something.

Heard of it. A guy post a couple years ago a security video of his being hit. Showed the driver pull up, hit the camper, get out look at the damage, and leave.

Yup. Happened to us. Just as Jagiven mentioned.

Here's our story.https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...lot-53981.html

Also, if the damage requires repairs, you may be entitled to a Loss of Value claim. In my case, the offender's insurance paid me almost an additional $1,000 for loss of value of the vehicle. I had spoken to a company who pursues insurance companies for these types of claims -- he insisted I could have received 10x that amount. However, I just wanted my losses (time, fuel costs, heartache) taken care of. The damage turned out to be cosmetic, no new issues have arisen due to the damage.

I have a good story on this topic. A fellow tenant was backing to the storage dump and scraped our cap. He could have pulled away and driven off. He contacted the lot owner who called me and related what happened and gave me his contact info. I called him and he told me the story, apologized and asked that I get a repair quote and he’d write me a check.
The local RV shop quoted me $10k! I was expecting maybe $5k, gave him a call with the quote and he decided to involve his insurance co. That delayed things a few days as they sent the adjuster. Repair was approved and completed in short order and looks great.
I started by saying he could have driven off, he was moving more than 2300 miles away the next week and walking would have been the easy out.
When I encounter rude, callous. . . people, I remember this gentleman and how he stepped up and I am encouraged. There are good people all around us.

We moved our rig this am and the manager told me that it was not their fault and kept saying he parked his personal vehicle next to my RV and thought oh gee could he have done that? Like he was testing me. I calmly told him that the police will be checking it out, meanwhile the insurance adjuster gave me a ballpark figure of $1100 but it could be a low figure depending on labor.

I sure wish who hit us had the decency to step up, thank goodness I am insured , I did move my Rig to a place closer to my home, the first one was closer to where I work. This new place gave me an over ride for 24 hour access.

We pay to have our trailer stored indoors. They do a walk around with me when we take it in and when we get it out. They write no damage on their slip and I get a copy. So far there have been no problems. If you are concerned, take a good digital camera (phones and tablets don't compare) and take photos right there in their yard with a copy of that day's local paper in each view. Or better yet with their employees in the photos showing any existing dings, damage or total lack thereof.

Pics and newspaper are a great idea if you don't access the vehicle much while it's in storage. But we come and go quite a bit during the season. And I do "storage checks" in our off season, and I exercise the chassis and generator.

Our storage owner called me earlier this year informing me a window was broken out of my Class C. I rushed right over and discovered a rock had been slung up from something and went through a window. Owner got VERY upset thinking someone had maliciously entered his facility and caused damage. He stores a lot of his own stuff there, so he takes it pretty personal.

He even contacted his grounds maintenance crew and walked the grounds with them thinking perhaps it was one of their mowers. This is unlikely. More likely it was a piece of heavy machinery from the next lot over (a business that uses large earth-moving equipment and other such things) slung a rock and it hit my window.

More than likely just a simple accident, no malice intended. I had it fixed at a local facility and the repair didn't come close to my insurance deductible, so I just had them fix it and moved on.

For an owner to say "sure, we'll look at the footage" and then later back out is VERY suspicious IMO.

Our guy is also a client, and he would probably cut us a check if we wanted, but we're not going to press the issue at this point.

Be sure the police know the location has video. The police can be a little more persuasive in viewing it, and the sooner the better (many places only store it a short time before it is automatically deleted).

I sure did let the police know, when the storage place found out that I did report it they decided to do some kissing up ,,but they lost my service as I moved out that day.

Last year someone got into the storage facility where we park our Whitehawk and proceeded to break into a dozen or more RV’s including ours. The facility was unwilling to accept responsibility for any repair costs to replace the windows and screens in both doors of our trailer however they did provide free rent for the next 4 months which was close to the price of the repairs. I don’t know what arrangements were made with the other victims. The facility had video but the lighting was bad and no one could be seen. They have since raised the height of the walls and installed more lighting. That’s the up side. The downside is that they have started converting parking spaces to storage buildings and it looks like I’ll need to start looking for a new place to store the trailer early next year. The manager says corporate no longer wants the liability and claims they can make more money having only storage units.

Best we can figure, the gardeners backed their utility trailer into the side of our Seneca... BIG scratches, but just cosmetic, we put some touchup paint on it and called it good. We looked all over for the trailer that might have caused it, but I think they moved out that day. They never parked next to us again.

We now have a big Class A next to us - a nice new one - so, I'm sure we're BOTH careful to not touch the other.

On the other side of us is a motorhome from the 70's that has probably not moved in more than a decade. Our rates are now pushing close to $200/month (they've been going up fast since we moved in), I can't imagine paying that on something that never gets used.
