Deadbolt locked unexpectedly
I had a new issue the other day with my 19XUD. I locked the deadbolt when I left the camper. When I returned I unlocked the deadbolt and went inside and hung up my keys. I then remembered something outside so went out and shut the door behind me. The deadbolt was then locked and I had no keys with me to get back in.
Fortunately I hadn't locked the storage compartment and my kind neighbors had a teenage girl who was small enough to crawl through to the inside.
How could this happen since the deadbolt has to be locked either from the inside or with a key? Has anyone had this happen to them?

No, that is a new one AFAIK! 
I always use the deadbolt to be sure I don't lock myself out. Now I have something new to worry about and guard against.

Did the deadbolt lock or was the slam latch handle locked?
I found out the hard way that if you unlock the slam latch, open the door. Then turn the key to the lock position, and remove the key (with the door open). The slam latch handle stays locked, until you use a key again.
We now keep a key stashed in a cargo hold (in camp we usually keep one unlocked)

The latch did not move so I assumed the deadbolt was locked. That could be what happened.

My truck has key pad door so we keep all of the spare keys and other plan B items in the truck. Everyone knows the KEY PAD pass key...
Has saved our day a couple of times haha...
We already knew about the same keys being used a lot with other campers and the passage way from the laundry chute to get inside...
That could ruin your day pretty quick locking your own self out haha...

If the door handle would not move it was not the deadbolt it was the door handle.

Just tried that and I'm sure that is what happened. From now on I will take the key out before I open the door. And also hide a key somewhere.

Not sure how that's even possible. My rig has 2 locks - the handle and the deadbolt. If the handle is locked, you can't even pull the handle as it's in a fixed locked position. The deadbolt is just that - you turn the key and you turn the bolt, so the door doesn't open. If the handle is unlocked and the bolt is unlocked, how does it actuate? You sure your DW didn't lock you out?! LOL

I found that if the door was locked with the key someone can open the door from the inside but someone cannot open from the outside. We have the same thing on our security door at home with a switch. It allows someone inside to open the door without the key (the usual mode), but an outsider cannot open the door. This was explained as a security feature....

Like a few saw, it probably wasn't the deadbolt. with just the deadbolt, you can lift the latch part, but the door won't open. But if you can't lift the latch, the it was the latch locked.
As someone mentioned, I also do not use the latch lock, just the deadbolt. Also, the second set of keys for the trailer stay in the truck and the spare truck keys stay in the trailer when traveling.
Another note, in other threads people have mentioned that when traveling, lock the deadbolt, a few have had the door open with bumps just using the latch lock.

I keep all of my spares keys in my truck glove box... Truck has PUSH BUTTON DOOR lock and everyone knows the sequence... Has saved us a couple of times haha...
On my POPUP trailer all I have to do is slide my hand in behind the door thru the VELCRO STRIP. Then I can open the trailer door from the inside haha... When I am bringing in groceries this is easier to do then putting the groceries down and getting the keys out of my pocket hehe...

Right, it was not the deadbolt. I know exactly what I did thanks to the responses. I think it will be a while before I do that again but am going to keep a key outside the trailer.

I keep a spare camper door key in the refrigerator compartment. I have done this for my last three campers. I also let my resort owner know it's there in case he needs to get in for some type of emergency when we are gone.

For the OP, with a 19XUD (or any other hybrid) it is a lot easier than sending someone crawling through the storage compartment assuming the bunks are down. The screens on the bunks are very easy to fully unzip from the outside and hop in through the end.
I open the bunk ends every spring and fall to pass my kayaks in/out for winter storage at the storage lot. Also very handy for tucking sheets under the mattress when making the beds.

Double Fail Safe
I keep a spare compartment key in a magnetic key holder under the frame in a tucked away spot. That compartment key then is used to unlock a passthrough/baggage compartment that the family knows where to then find a spare key to open the door/deadbolt.
Kind of like a Mission Impossible puzzle!
