Diesel Users, Suppliers Warn of Shortage of DEF Additive

Next shortage on the Horizon. From RV Business.

https://rvbusiness.com/diesel-users-...-def-additive/

According to a report by Mansfield Energy, urea prices were $600/ton in December — three times the normal rate.

“Across the board, major DEF manufacturers are struggling to maintain supplies,” the report stated. “Most of the major manufacturers have changed annual contracts to monthly spot-priced allocations. Many are reducing their DEF output to increase fertilizer production. Others expect regional outages throughout the year due to labor shortages and supply gaps. Price hikes have been commonplace…”

Not too mention other supply side delivery issues which also include fertilizer deliveries... Have you ever heard of a shipper saying to the customers, Don't ship so much or we will not ship anything else for\to you... ? ~CA

From your link above:
Pilot Travel Centers CEO Shameek Konar said the aforementioned disruptions have led to Union Pacific Railroad ordering Pilot to reduce its DEF deliveries or face a shipment embargo.

Thank You Grumpy,
As soon as I read this, I headed to the auto part store, and back home with 3 2.5 Gal. jugs of Def. And on sale as well, $18.95 at the local O'Reilly store.

This would be another pro for a 21 year old diesel.

Walmart has def stock at under $10. 2.5gal.

Don’t stock up more than a years supply, it has a shelf life. Also, don’t let it freeze.

Shortages are also caused by paranoid people that go out and buy what's left on the shelf.

I’ll second that. At least it’s one thing I don’t have to worry about. The $6.39/ gal diesel price is bad enough.

In and out of stations and stores on our trip across the country and have not seen a shortage. Misinformation and panic buying will due what the manufactures want. False shortage and higher prices.

Walmart has had empty shelves occasionally for the last 2 years, I remember people talking shortage back then. It actually seems to be better supply recently…

My Wally World is either out of DEF or only a couple on the shelf in the last ~year. Found rural king had a lot in stock and so did tractor supply.

Is this just a rumor? I've found nothing to support this.

A few days ago we went to Walmart and they had probably 150 2.5 gallon containers on the shelf. Who knows what's in the warehouse. I've not seen a shortage yet and we cover a lot of territory.

It's a railroad thing, specifically UP. I worked at a major mining operation in Wyoming which relies solely on Railroad to transport product, if we used up our allotted quota of trains for the day, scheduled at midnight the previous day, they would halt operations. Often times parking trains off the mine site for hours or even sometimes days. It was very baffling and they would not provide a reason for not pulling in and loading and getting underway. Bad for the mine, bad for the consumer, bad for everyone and everything but UP who did not give a hoot about delayed shipments or production schedules.

This will be kind of a pain for RVer's with diesel but when the truckers can't get it we all will be in a world of hurt. I read that Flying J is starting to have some problems get the stuff.

Here in Wyoming, our Walmart has the 2.5 gallon jugs for 11.38. So far I haven't seen any shortages, but never say never.

No problem with that, just make sure you aren't in the warranty period on your newer diesels, be it Ford, Duramax or Cummins. The dealers will NOT do warranty engine work. I ran into this a couple of years ago on my GMC diesel. Even the so called deletion units that plug into your obd port. Even bypassing DEF is recorded on your ECM.
Do want you want, just do it after any engine warranty's. Yeah, they do look.

Thank you Grumpy, very insightful.
GHen, I didn’t know of a shelf life. But, as far as freezing, I keep the truck out in the barn and it has not frozen yet.
I think the urea acts as antifreeze.
FYI, urea is used in hair removal.
