Dining seats - plastic over foam?

So I have had this annoying problem with my seat cushions at my dinette. If you were sitting on one and someone else sat down, you popped up because it sent all the air over. Not good when drinking or having something like soup!

So today I unzipped one and discovered the foam inside is lightly wrapped with a plastic - kind of like a very thin garbage bag. So I removed it and wow, what a difference! The bounce is totally gone.

So my question - what is the purpose of the plastic? Is it on there to protect the foam in the event of a spill? Was it supposed to have been removed durning dealer prep? I see no harm in not having it there, do you?

Terry-- The only thing I can up with is it's there to keep them clean during shipping and the big reason is to make it easy to slide the covers on. Larry

The plastic keeps the foam from deteriorating from friction between it and the cover.

Hahahahha.... I can actually visualize that! We have one 'clumsy' grandchild that will spill a picture of a pitcher of koolaid! Ok...a little offtrack.... However, we haven't had to endure what you mentioned above although I can just imagine your Kentucky bourbon flying up to the ceiling and getting the earwigs drunk!

I have to check mine out. I haven't noticed that problem yet in the 6+ months we've actually used it in the last two years.

Why not punch some small holes in the plastic to let the air out. That way the plastic will still prevent friction between the covers and foam.

I never had the problem you had Terry. I opened up one of my seat cushions and saw that they ripped the plastic open along the zipper side, but left it in place.

I think that the plastic is just a protective wrapper put on by the foam manufacturer before it's sent to Jayco, and it's meant to be removed.

I will never forget the first night in our first new pup in 1986, I woke up drenched with sweat, the sheets and the matterest top were soaked, (& no i didn't) only to find out the mattress was wrapped in plastic, absolutly no breathing. We easley removed the cover, ripped off the plastic cover & then spent ther good part of an 1/2 hour getting the apolstery back on without bundling the foam.

Just had a chance to check the cushion. Like Smoker Bill, our plastic is still present but the area under the zipper was sliced open

Well I am going to be a rebel and leave mine off completely. I will 2x check them on occasion to make sure it is not causing any problem with the foam.

I wonder if I have broken any law? It surely can't be as bad as taking the tags off a mattress!

OK Terry, I gotta say in all my RV forum experience this is the first post I`ve seen where bourbon gets spilled from someone sitting down on plastic covered cushions! This dilemma has got to be solved, and post haste!

That is EXACTLY right....it took 7 long years to make it, I am not going to allow any of it to be wasted.

Current favorite: Buffalo Trace -- visited the distillery about a month ago...ahh...memories....
