Don't Ever Assume - Safety First

I am new to the forum but wanted to talk about safety in travel trailers.

We just bought a used 2015 Jay Flight SLX 264BHW and the plastic tab that is installed from the factory to prevent the battery from dying on the smoke detector was never removed. 7 years! The original owner never bothered to check it and the dealer never tested it upon delivery.

Just a word of caution; you should be testing your smoke and CO2 alarms monthly for full-timers and every time you go camping for weekend warriors.

I am still shocked that it was never checked in those 7 years!

Good advice. When our trailer isn't going to be used for sometime I always remove the batteries and leave the battery door open. I put the batteries in a plastic bag and put them in the kitchen sink where they are easily seen.


When the batteries go bad it's always at 3 am...why is that???

A small stove fire (unattended frying pan) will engulf an RV in less than two minutes. I've seen it happen.

I have 2 smoke detectors plus separate Co2 detector. Get rid of that POS fire extinguisher that comes with your RV and buy 2 quality ABC rated extinguishers.

Also check that your bedroom emergency escape window in is good working order. If able, practice your escape.
