This is an older thread that I had not seen before, but in regards to the original question.

How do you get them home from the store if not carried in your car?

It is legal to transport 1lb propane cylinders when they are filled with propane from the manufacture such as a new cylinder would be, but it is not legal to transport them if that cylinder has been refilled (unless the cylinder is designed and certified to be refilled). ~CA

The last time I checked the 1lb. propane canister screwed into my flippin' hot Weber grill didn't explode or start leaking. And neither did any of the hundreds I have used in the last 40 years. I think maybe they are designed for this use.

It is also illegal to transport the BBQ 17 or 20 pound cylinders laying down. They must be vertical. The issue is the vent is in the top to evacuate excess pressure. The valves allow gas to pass through, not liquid, or liquid would too slow. Not sure.

This is an old thread that got beat to death a year ago but if all of the little "violations" that we have all done for 50 years were piled together we might get a day and a half community service from the local court.

I will start the list. Used my cell phone at the gas pump, tore a tag off of a pillow just because I could, and yes transported one pound propane bottles in the RV for the last 20 years not to mention turned a few 30 pounders on their side because they would not fit in the back of the Jeep otherwise.

But then I was not advised of my rights under Miranda.

I drank water from a garden hose, broke open thermometers to get the mercury to play with and rode a bike without a helmet, plus a zillon other things that kids can't do today...still here after 79 years.

My thinking is that a punishment of $500,000 and 5 or 10 years in prison is not in the same class as the crimes you have listed. There are lots of people refilling and hauling these around and not knowing what could happen to them is something happens. Ignorance of the law is no excuse! If I can inform someone that a dangerous act has huge ramifications and someone does not get hurt or worse, then, I will feel good!

All of which has NOTHING TO DO with the original question which is over a year old and were bought at a store.

Do you think it's safe to store the cylinders in the back of my Suburu, hemmed in so that they don't move around, and cracking a couple of windows for ventilation?

I enforced laws for 35 years. No amount of preaching/educating will make those who do not care, follow the law. If it did I would have been out of a job long before making the 35 years. There are signs and warning everywhere for various laws and it still does no good.
I get passed on the freeway, moving with the flow of traffic at 80. I watch cars roll stop signs or make a right on red without stopping. Point is you are wasting your breath. Oh, and no one and I mean no one violating the laws you mention is going to pay that fine or serve that amount of time. Criminals with long rap sheets get probation. Even if someone gets hurt, perps walk!

And yes, this thread should have died a year ago and was revived for something totally unrelated to the OPs question.

Ok I get it! Do not comment in any way that veers off the exact question to comment made in the original thread, no matter what others might say after that.
Do not comment on old threads, start a new on with a very specific comment or question.
Do not start a new thread if it has been discussed in the past as there is nothing new to discuss.
Do not inform anyone that their actions may be dangerous or cost them time or money.
Ok, I got the message.

When I originally posted way back when my comment was simply to use common sense. Then, I was done with it.

As we all know, common sense ain't so common any more, maybe never was.

My original post eliminated what I knew. I simply thought that everyone involved would be smart. I guess not. It's so simple to argue.

In college I paid my tuition as a delivery boy. I drove a truck with a "hot box" heated by 1# propane bottles. The 20 pounder was in the store and the boss REFILLED the little guys daily. He knew it wasn't smart, but would not spend the $ for new ones.

One day the local Fire Chief came in for a courtesy examination. He chastised the owner for that setup.

One evening things went wrong. The gas came out unexpectedly and started a fire. One person was killed, another badly burned and the store burned to the ground. Thank God I was not working that night.

Once again, I say go for it. Just don't occupy the campsite next to me.
