EMS Question

So I am going to purchase a 50a PI EMS for my new trailer. My question is when we hook up to 30amp only, is it safe to put the 30amp conversion adapter hooked up to the EMS controller and then the electrical hook up? Just wondering if this can somehow damage the EMS unit itself? Or do a need to use a dog bone adapter from the EMS to the electrical hook up?

That's how I hooked up mine last month. It was my 1st time with your exact scenario. It worked perfect!

It works well either way. I use it all the time. Only precaution is to keep the EMS PT50c in a upright position as if it was plugged in to the pedestal. I use a bungee to support it.

Keep in mind there is a built in time delay after you plug in the EMS


Operating Instructions
1. Disconnect AC power (using pedestal breaker switch), then and
plug EMS into AC Power. Then switch AC power back on using
pedestal breaker switch.
2. Digital display will flash 888 for (1) second, then begin scrolling
thru voltage(s), amps, line frequency, error code, and previous error
code (if applicable). In addition, the time delay will count down, and
the delay light will flash for the 2 minute 16 second time delay in the
bottom right corner of the display.
3. Verify E 0 is displayed.
4. Setup is complete.

I've had 2 PI's and both were trouble free. First one was a pole mount 30A and 2nd is a hard wired 50A with remote display. Each one has caught a power "event". Did it save any of my electronics? Not a clue but I sleep better knowing it's on the job. The customer support is excellent.

I prefer to use a "dogbone" adapter on mine for several reasons.

1. the weight of the EMS will put a strain on the direct plug adapter. It could work loose.
2. It sticks out so far with it that the lid on the pedestal can't be closed all the way. This can allow driving rain into the pedestal and it also blocks the way I secure mine. (A padlock to the pedestal.)

When I use the pigtail adapter, I try and support the EMS with a bungee or protect it from the elements somewhat with a small piece of plastic or a bucket on top.
As stated earlier, when using a Dogbone, don't lay the EMS on the ground or leave it oriented any way but up and down.

This picture shows how I mount mine. Note I am using different type dogbone adaptor. It is using a pedestal with 2 - 30a outlets.(Georgia SP) same method though. Also see the padlock on the plug.

I have 2 PT50C's right now, one in service and one as a spare. I WILL NOT plug in anywhere without one.

X2 on several "events", but no damage so I sleep better also.

Perfect, thank you! Is it better to get that type of two 30a connectors to 50a rather than the plain 50a to 30a? I will be staying mostly at State Parks, do all pedastals have two 30a connections?

Nope. Not all pedestals have 2 30A connections.
