Eternabond tape

The tape on the slide roofs are peeling- How difficult is it to remove and replace the tape? I know that Eternabond tape is pricey so I need input on how to do this as a DIY chore- I have all winter to do this job [ we are in AZ for the season ]- I also am interested in opinions on rubber roof treatments as our roof "sheds" every time I clean the roof- I was approached by an rv tech to have the roof treated but I am skeptical about his claims- THANX in advance for all info- DD

I would try removing tape using Acetone. Peel and apply acetone a little at a time with a sponge paint brush.
Next year, I plan on using Liquid Roof to re-coat my roof.
There's a good YouTube Video. Looks like about $300/5 gal and DIY application.

Do I understand correctly that your trailer has Eternabond on it now? Its pretty hard to remove once its on. I think what Doug suggested may be your best option.

You did ask for opinions.

I'm not clear by the post what is there either. Whether it is Eternabond or not, why remove the existing material? Most anything you do to remove properly bonded material (solvents, heat, mechanical means, etc.) risks damage to the membrane system. I would remove any material which comes loose by pulling with fingers or using a fingernail to lift. Anything which is still bonded should be fine. Then prep the area per instructions and apply the Eternabond or other selected repair as needed over the questionable areas.

As to roof coatings on EPDM. Some manufacturers recommend against it. Be certain to thoroughly research the product before you actually apply it. Some of the coatings will affect the ability of future repairs to bond properly. Others may work over time to deteriorate the membrane material. Be certain to check for any hint of silicon product listed on the label. You don't want that under any circumstances. Do your research. Sales people are not necessarily an accurate source. vic

Most rubber and epdm roofing material has a 12yr warranty. I would not put anything on it except new caulk or eterna-bond tape unless you are willing to replace it at your cost if it deteriorates.

I'm assuming you're talking about the strip of Eternabond tape running along the top of the outer edge of the slide. A small piece of the tape continues over the end and onto the walls. If you look down on the tape from above, you can see round head screws popping up very 15" or so. My dealer claims this is a weak link in sealing the top of the slide as trailer movement over time will cause those screw heads to come loose and perhaps poke through the ET. He also claimed that during 2011 and 2012, the Eternabond tape was not applied correctly and in fact was peeling and coming loose. This dealer took the time on new trailers to remove the round head screws, countersink the holes and and reinstall new flat head screws. After cleaning off as much old tape as possible, the surface was cleaned with Coleman Camping fuel and new Eternabond tape was installed.

That is a good little video. I notice that it said not to worry about the "microsealant" which stays properly adhered.

Alpha Systems roof membranes are common on Jayco trailers. This is some of what they say about maintenance and repair.

RECOMMENDED REPAIR METHOD FOR ALPHA SYSTEMS
ROOF SEALANT

During routine cleaning (3-4 times a year), all caulk and sealants should be inspected for voids or cracking. If the caulk is cracking, pull up any loose caulk. Do not use any tools, such as a putty knife, that could puncture the rubber roof membrane. If you cannot pull the caulk off by hand, it is still adhered to the roof and should be left alone.

Clean the areas to be re-sealed using regular soap and water. The area must be dry before continuing.

Apply a generous amount of sealant over the top of any existing caulk in the area being re-sealed.

Solvents should not be used during cleaning. Solvents can damage existing caulk and may weaken plastic parts that are present on the roof.

The best price I found was on Amazon. They sold it locally at Grainger, but more expensive.

Amazon was about 40% cheaper.

A long time ago (5 years) but if it wasn't mentioned, Best Materials (bestmaterials.com) had 4"x50' rolls of white Eternabond for a good price and free shipping. Don't know if that's still the case, but I bought 2 rolls back then for just under $100.

Just had my first experience with Eterna Tape. Man is that stuff sticky. Went on pretty easy except one time I let 2 pieces touch. Wasted a few feet of the tape. Would recommend this to seal anything.
