Extended Warranties?? Good-Bad?

Any good or bad companies to look for? Just bought by new Jayco today. I passed on the extendd warranty for now, seemed expensive. I was told I have a year to buy it if I choose.

6 year warranty (really only 4, because the first two are included) for almost $5K.

Protective Asset Protection is the company they are selling.

Thoughts??

They offered me the warranty my Seneca for $7,000. If I decide to buy one I will wait until the2 year factory is about up.

You can do a lot of work for the issue you might have for that kind of money. After 2 years you will have likely seen most of your issues that would be covered under the extended warranty. 3 new trailer in the past 12 years and never purchased an extended warranty

If they were a good deal, the people selling them would go broke!

Don't waste 5K on a warranty, its like tossing it in the trash, the only winner is the dealer and warranty co. Better to put that 5K in a bank account and take money out when you need to fix something, you will be surprised how much is left after four years that warranty would cover.

You can buy a lot of hardware and labor for $5K.

Brand new AC $400 to $700, New Frig $1,400, more likely need a defrost or a new circuit board, $100, Water heater, most likely issue, burnt out electric heating element,$7, if it really was shot, $350 for a few water heater. Tongue jack $250.

Anything else I would suspect your regular insurance would cover, such as an accident or a damaged roof, window, or door.

None of the extended warranties I have looked at did anything for routine maintenance, nor covered items such as water leaks due to poo routine maintenance.

However, I have friend that insist on having warranties for everything they purchase, and as soon as the warranty nears the end of its life, they replace the object. They think they must have a warranty on everything. So each to their own comfort level.

I've said it before on this forum - EVERY consumer advocate and reporter on the planet says that extended warranties, service plans, buyer protection plans, etc. are a bad deal.

It's just like Vegas - Insurance is a percentage game and the odds always favor the house.

Take that 5 grand you would spend on the warranty and put it in a separate bank account and use it ONLY for warranty type repairs .. I bet at the end of the term you will still have most of that 5 grand left... warranty companies are infamous for turning down covered claims. Just read a few issues of Trailer life's "ombudsman" column.

In my past I have never purchased an extended warranty. On my most recent I did. I paid a small percentage of the numbers being thrown around here however and it was a trivial percentage of the total purchase price. It gives me ten years of peace of mind on things like appliances and slides(4).

With that said, I really don't recommend that people purchase them. I have sold them in the past(not on RV's) and for the most part they are a huge profit center for the seller.

At the 5K number there is no way. I don't think there are 5K worth of things that could go wrong.

Extended Warranties?? Good-Bad?

I laugh. The salesmen always talk about quality of the product and then when purchasing said item the GM gives you the warning to by the extended warranty because all these bad things can happen. LOL Is it a quality product or not?

Extended warranties are essentially just an expensive insurance policy. If you can afford to self insure then they aren't worth it. If a sudden $2,500 repair bill would cause you financial hardship then maybe it's worth considering.

I never buy them and have never had a repair bill big enough over the last 20+ years on any of my vehicles or toys that would have justified the cost of even one extended warranty.
