Smile Fire prevention month, change batteries.

Since October is fire prevention month thought I would remind people to change your batteries in your smoke detectors in your RV and check your fire extinguishers. I was recently talking with a firefighter and we got to talking about extinguishers in RVs. He advised that it was a good idea to remove your extinguisher if storing your rig for the winter. The chemicals inside the extinguisher will freeze and compact. If you have left the extinguisher in previously it’s good to turn it upside down and smack the bottom of it a couple of times to loosen the ingredients inside. Also check for expired ones. They are very reasonably priced to replace. And again change the batteries in your smoke detector. Happy Fall everyone.

Great reminder BertaB. My DW reminded me of that last week. A local hardware store here had a sale on new detectors, so we bought 2 new ones to replace ones I didn't know the real age of. They were here when we bought the house. Now, these have 10 year batteries in them, that you never have to change (couldn't if you wanted to). When they expire, they let you know it's time.

Great reminder. Each fall after my last trip, I remove my smoke detector batter, and toss it. I leave the cover open until, I place a new battery in it.

At home, I put a piece of masking tape around the battery and write the date on the tape, so I know when I changed the battery last if I forget one.

I use the daylight savings change day as my battery change day.

That's usually when the news folks here have reminders on the TV and radio to change the batteries out.

We swapped all our smoke and CO2 detectors to the 10 year models. We write replace date on them so when the time comes whoever owns the rig knows to replace.
