First homemade tool

Not sure this is the right section but I wanted to show off my first homemade tool for the rv. This is a very simple tool I made. The purpose is to place one end on the side of the RV then holding the other end I can check the area for the slides is clear of obstructions so I can slide them out without fear of hitting anything. My wife is not particularly useful in this respect and she will be too busy keeping the kid entertained.

Anyway just wanted to show it off, have not tried it yet but I expect it to work as planned.

I marked my 3 foot level that way I don't need to carry anything extra...

With my fingertips touching the side of the trailer, the slide comes out to the middle of my chest. If I can walk down the length of the trailer while touching the side and not walk into anything, then I know there's enough room for it.

Home made tool

Congratulations. What is the material?
I had made a similar tool when we first got the RV.
I cut a piece of PVC pipe to length ( slide depth ) with an extra 6 inches.
Doesn't get much simpler, cheaper or easy to store.
And my wife can use it.

Great idea but just another thing to store for me. I taped a piece of black tape on my fresh water hose at the length of the slide. I just hold it up and walk down the side where the slide will extend.

This is what I did.

It is just some wood not sure what type I was not paying that much attention. With some felt on the ends to protect the side of the trailer. I picked it up at OSH (I am going to miss that place) when buying tools for the RV during the going out of business sale.

I just walk around the trailer too. It's also 3' from body center to fingers. Positioning to put the pedestal between slides in tighter sites is the part that requires work.

That's not a bad idea. There are many tools that care more useful than the wife, this is another. :-) Anyhow I've always just eyeballed it and use the remote to open the slides so I can be out there watching.

On one of our units, the power cord hatch was right behind the slide. Just pulled the cord out about 6 inches past the opened slide, wrapped a bit of red tape around it and was done. No having to find a place to store another item that we were likely to forget, and it was so handy.

I use a piece of clothesline. It works and keep it in the pocket of my door.

Will it measure the distance to near-by tree-limbs overhead? That is where we have the biggest challenge when the slide comes out. Like others have mentioned, they have the DW controll the slide while I am outside checking the clearance to the tree.

I guess I eyeball those and watch as my DW rolls them out if it appears they are close. If limbs are going to hit your slides you better be very careful pulling in as your roof my get seriously damaged. JMHO happy camping.
