FL TURNPIKE now accepting EZ-PASS

That makes EZ PASS good on all FL toll roads.

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) is now accepting E-ZPass®, bringing interoperability to millions of toll highway customers on the East Coast of the United States and as far west as Illinois.

But that requires a separate account, now people from up East can use their regular EZ-Pass on the Turnpike where before they couldn't. Also SUNPASS is now good all over with the new transponder, no need to switch accounts.

Great news. I purchased a Sunpass before we started snowbirding last year and never used it so I have $100 on it. If I can use it in NY, NJ, etc. that's going to be helpful.

But you need the new transponder "Sunpass Pro". I think you can order it on line from SUN PASS $14.99

YEP! That's what it says.

By joining the E-ZPass network, E-ZPass customers, including winter visitors who come to Florida to enjoy the warm climate, can now use their transponder continuously on nearly 900 miles of Florida’s toll roads in addition to the 18
states where E-ZPass is already accepted.

We're not frequent flyers on the NY Thruway, so up to this point, we don't have an E-Z Pass. Is there a separate transponder, or additional one you need to tow a trailer?

The two times we used the Thruway for our Covid shots in Syracuse, we received the bill in the mail, and both times they over charged. There were sensors, or cameras that didn't recognize where we entered the highway, so it took a guess. We still have the white plates, but they're still like new.

It took a phone call to get them straightened out, and the people we talked to were very nice and accommodating. I gathered in conversation, that it's a fairly common occurrence in NY.

Not that I know of since they count axles when you go through. We've used the standard one in NY, OH, IN, Il Fl and WV. with no problems.

No additional transponder for New York. The scanners catch your trailer height (used to determine if TT or 5th wheel) and axle count.

Just the standard Transponder works on the NY Thruway. Nothing extra needed. Use our EZ-Pass each time when we head to Maine. (I avoid the Cuomo Bridge eastbound at all times due to insanely high toll prices) Have used our EZ-Pass in 16 of the 18 states listed over the past 5 years without issue .

This is great news for all of us snowbirds.

Thanks Grumpy for posting

I don't really understand the trailer or fifth wheel height thing. A few years ago, we came home on the Thruway from a family camping trip. Us with a TT, and my FIL with a fifth wheel behind us. We were at the exit toll booth, and I was going to pay the tolls for both of us. The attendant said the fifth wheel was more money, because it was taller. Two axles, just like our TT. What difference could that possible make? Because it may have weighed a little bit more?

According to the NY Thruway site vehicles under 7' 6" pay less in tolls. But it does not make sense as it is the height over the first 2 Axles. Did your FIL have a larger truck or Kayak on Roof?

I do see that you would pay approx. 61% less being a resident than I as a non-resident with EZ-Pass. Not that I plan on moving to save a few $$$

Must not be thinking clearly today. Makes sense as the Fifth Wheel is sitting on rear axle of the TV.

Just found this on the Thruway site:

For example, a 2-axle pick-up truck with a 2-axle 5th wheel trailer, 7'6" or greater, which extends forward over the rear axle, would be classified as a 4H. Using this same logic, a 2-axle pick-up truck with a 3-axle 5th wheel trailer, 7'6" or greater, would be classified as a 5H.

I'm not sure on the exact height of the fifth wheel, but it wasn't a big one. A Copper Canyon, maybe a 28 footer. Definitely taller than the 10 feet of our TT. It just seemed strange that it made that much of a difference. All he did was squash more bugs on the front of it.

The only place I've ever had an issue with the EZ pass and a trailer is in WV. Toll booth attendant had to add the trailer in the system manually for some reason. No big deal other than having to stop at the booth.
