I've always been a V-8 guy and when looking for a newer tow vehicle, I compared the 5.0 and the 3.5 V-6 Ecoboost. Both were impressive. I was a bit hesitant, but I liked the fact that the EB's max torque rating was around 2000 rpm and 420ft.lb vs. 380ft.lb on the 5.0. Test driving, the EB would certainly "move"! In previous towing experiences I found the lower rpm max torque to be more driver friendly and it seems to eliminate a lot of "back shifting" to keep up with traffic and road conditions. I bought the 3.5 Ecoboost with a 3:55 rear and HD tow. Ford has this combo rated at 9500#. I pull both a 6500# car hauler and my 27RLS rated at 7000# dry. It performs excellent and amazes me that you can get his much pulling capacity from a V-6. Gas mileage average overall has been around 11-12 mpg running about 70 on the interstate. I've read where others are pulling more with the same truck.

Both the V-8 and the Ecoboost will get the job done but from my experience, I'd have to take the Ecoboost again! I'm waiting for them to offer a V-8 with an Ecoboost twin-turbo option!

If you have a 4x4 don't over look the front diff if changing gear ratios. What you do the rear you have to do to the frt.

I have not looked at this thread for the last 24 hours and thank you all for the answers and honest opinions.

Today, we traveled from Kingman AZ to Ely NV today. The Sport Trac averaged about 9 MPG for the 340 or so miles. Worst thing is having to stop frequently for fuel (22 gallon tank).

Nevada highways are superior to Arizona's, especillay I-40.

Again, still undecided but you all have given us food for thought and thanks for keeping the topic nice!

Whoever offers a turbo v8 first I will buy!! I mean stock from the manufacturer. I know you can add a turbo to pretty well any motor now. Unfortunately I don't see that happening

But remember to wait for the 2ND gen. 1st gens. always seem to have some wrinkles that need to be ironed out.

I'll just leave this here:

Twin-Turbo V8 in the new Raptor: The F-150 Raptor will also receive the upcoming EcoBoost 5.0 V8 in 2018

Wait till you see the price! For what they'll ask for it, you can get a brand new LOADED 1 ton diesel.

I am looking for the twin-Turbo 5.0 for the other 99% of my driving time, not the towing portion... although the towing part should be effortless.

I agree 100% and if it becomes available I would take a V8 Twin Turbo over a diesel any day of the week...

If they don't increase the capacity, it doesn't matter how much power they give the Raptor. The current one has a few hundred pounds less payload capacity than a regular F150, which wasn't very high to begin with. I couldn't even tow my X213.

Agreed, I'd like to see Ford put either Ecoboost engine in a 3/4 ton chassis

That's because of it's softer suspension, which was how it was designed. It's more a power truck than a towing truck.

Oh, and by the way... the rear shocks are $820.00 each.

Yeah can't say I've ever seen a Raptor in a campground.

I also had the 65 Mustang, but its HP was at the high end of the HP range. Like a lot of members say it has turbo', but so do the diesel engines.

So, I went with the EcoBoost, I am VERY happy with the choice and so is DW. Would I do it again, YES, unless of course they make the V8 with twin turbo's an option.

The only draw back on our truck is trying to fit the 157" wb in a regular parking spot:-(

Don
When I went looking last summer, I was told that the Eco with 3.73's was only available in the HD payload which was not being produced in 2015 (or in extremely limited numbers that no dealership could locate.) The 5.0 is available with 3.73 with Max Tow whereas I was advised that the Eco with Max Tow only came with 3.55. I realize the Order sheets say different, just what I was told in Canada. Potential fuel savings aside, I would be interested to see a side by side of the 3.73/5.0 combo vs the Eco/3.55 combo for towing performance as those seem to be most common in tow setups.

I have a camping buddy with a 2014 Eco with HDP and 3.73's and he leaves my 5.4 with 3.73 in the dust when accelerating climbing hills/mountains. His TT is 1500lbs lighter so it is not apples to apples but I am pretty sure the result would be similar even if we swapped trailers. I love the V-8 sound and proven track record, but if I was towing a lot in the mountains I think that would be the factor to tip my scales in favor of an Eco and then I'd get my own MP3 of a 5.0 to blast through my Kicker Soundstage, although I would have to figure out how to sync the mp3 with acceleration.

Really interested on seeing the specs on a 5.0 Eco, even de-tuned for the F150. Would mpg differential between the 5.0L and Eco 5.0L be the same as the 3.5 and the Eco 3.5 and would the torque/hp differential be the same also ?

Don, the extra 10 gallons of gas for towing makes it worth parking at the back of the mall parking lot.

It isn't necessary to get the 6.5 bed for a 36 gallon tank. Unless there's a 46 gallon tank option I'm unaware of . That would be a heck of a tank...

The extra 120 lbs would be a pain, less beer in the bed to take with.
I have always parked at the back of the parking lots... paint jobs last so much longer

I have the electronic differential with locking. It's not a 4x4. When I had the oil changed last week, I had the dealer give me a quote for parts and labor to change to a 3.73. $1400

I have a friend that's an engineer for the power trains in the new trucks coming out. All I can say is, he said good thing you have over a year left on your lease. They are coming out with 10 speed transmission for all there trucks for the 2017 models, and they are having some interesting challenges with the new transmissions. I will leave it at that.
