Fuel & food woes!

Filled my tank this morning. $171.57. Diesel hit a "new" high of $6.02 per gallon. Gladly, I don't have to use it as a daily driver. Thought I'd give ya the skinny if you're traveling through MD.

Then I hear this morning on the news: " The prices at the pump are hitting all-time highs and unfortunately it's just gonna get worse".

Last night, went to the grocery store and literally had enough bags for just one trip into the house from the car. $216.60.

Great.

We are literally becoming poorer.

Bottom line is, the value of any commodity, be it a corndog, a cow patty, a house, or a gallon of diesel fuel, is what we the consumers are willing to pay. Big oil is going to sell you a gallon of their commodity for $6.02 because if you don't pay it someone else is waiting in line to buy that gallon. Likewise, you're going to sell your house, car, rv, for whatever the market will bear (who sells to the lowest offer?). This isn't so much about what is happening as it is about what always happens.

With material supply issues, formula/food getting in shorter supplies, the prices and manpower shortages, I have to wonder if we are headed towards third world scenario. Is it going to get to the point where the store shelves will be empty by 11 am? Check your retirement portfolio lately? I believe this is bigger than a "recession". Had to work with a youngster lately? At least my paycheck still shows up every week. I help provide a sense of security, even though we can't use the word security. Business is booming the last 2 years.

Checked onto our campground last Thursday, the first thing they asked was if we were looking for a career change.

It is stating the obvious, but all that food and other stuff you buy is transported by the fuel you and others buy. We are now competing with all of Europe for the same sources of fuel since Russia can no longer sell their petroleum to Europe. Therefore a large part of the blame for higher prices goes to the Russian leader.

Diesel is $9/gal in most parts of Canada right now, and half of our earned pay is taken by the Federal Government as income tax. So really, I have to earn $18 to buy a gallon of diesel. Sucks to say the least.

We have planned a road trip of ~1700 miles each way this summer (PA to Texas) so these prices are going to make it quite interesting to the bank account.

Ok...most of us with 100k of RV..toys...Cars..etc. Didn't get them because they where cheap and affordable

Did we

Current reality.

I have gone from AZ to the gulf , Texas Louisiana Mississippi, last 3 years but didn't go this year..why you ask
Not gas $
Not food $
But that crappy, windy drive thru NM and Western Texas Sucks B$#@s
Sure gas was about $500 more based on my usual trips..food well who knows cuz I never skimp on food and usually have HUGE impulse buy COSTS when camping

So I'm not really on board with the complaints about costs

Now the $130 a night RV sites in Cali...now that's ridiculous for a crappy site

I manage operations and maintenance for a medium sized transportation company. We run School buses, local transit buses and charter motorcoaches. We have 180 buses total and all but 4 run on Diesel. We go through roughly 11 - 15,000 gallons of diesel per month. We just dropped 10,000 gallons at the bulk price of $6.80 per gallon. Given that much of our work is through multi year contracts we have no way to increase pricing on our services. We are hemorrhaging cash across multiple divisions.

By Design???? You bet its by design and they are killing consumers and businesses at the same time...

There's supposedly a shortage of diesel in the NE.

It's $6.39 here in PA. It's pretty much the final dagger to the RV industry. That follows a lack of towing vehicles for sale, the overpricing of new RVs, and inflation everywhere else, and stock crashing.

In Mar/Apr the industry set a record for deliveries. The dealer where I bought mine is overflowing again with units when there were none to start the year.

I had to switch some plans and was able to reserve a Fri/Sat night at a KOA which is typically sold out every weekend.

It's the beginning of bad times ahead. It's bad now... imagine when people start losing jobs en masse.

How much blame do you think is fair to assign to our current president's policies and desire to make the "tough transition" away from fossil fuels?

As a working man with a family of 5 I certainly can't afford some trips where fuel is costing double to TRIPLE what it was when the Mean Tweeter was in office. My pre-planned, pre-paid trip to Tennessee later this year just got substantially more expensive. I'm likely to pay more in fuel to get there and back then I paid for the campsites...

Not all of us are rich, some of us are trying to give our families a little something that we didn't have ourselves.

Be careful folks, you will get your posts moderated out of existence or the whole thread closed down. Yeah, this does happen.

Keep your political opinions, and opinions are all they are, to yourself where they belong and you won't be subject to moderation.

Mods can moderate me if they chose. I asked a question, that's all. When I see someone assigning blame in the wrong place, I am okay in my desire to inquire. If a moderator disagrees, its their board to moderate. Our president stated that we are in the midst of a "tough transition" away from fossil fuels. Do we think that the concerted efforts by this administration to move away from fossil fuels has any impact on higher fuel prices?

Again, this is a legitimate question to ask, until a moderator tells me its not.

I don't think it is simply an opinion that Fuel and Food prices are a lot higher now as it is a non-disputed fact that prices are higher. Discussing why prices are higher certainly leads to a lot of reasons why this is the case, including politics, which of course we should all be sensitive and careful discussing as turning any thread into a political discussion is against the forum rules. ~CA
