Fuel Prices

We are leaving our stay-at-home site in So Cal to chase cooler weather. I have a fuel card with TCS that I've used for one year and always received $.30 to $.50 discount at selected truck stops. Checked their pricing for our departure Sunday and will be paying $1.30 to $1.70 after discount for diesel at TA and Petro stations. This is near Phoenix and is representative of their current diesel pricing at $1.36 with $1.379 discount!

OK?

I guess I am not following you with this. Diesel in the Phoenix metro area is running $1.94 to 3.29. The closer to interstate highways the higher. The average is around $2.50.

You pre-pay a sizable amount ($750 here) to TCS and are able to swipe at the pump at truck stops. They buy in bulk and pass the discount along minus a couple cents per gallon for their mark-up. As the capture shows, the TA station outside of Phoenix has a posted price of $2.739 and I receive $1.379 discount for a purchase price of $1.361. Our next stop is Williams, AZ near Flagstaff. The Little America truck stop is $2.739 retail, $1.392 discount, selling price of $1.348.
The card is affiliated with FMCA. WAY bigger discount than Good Sam, Pilot RV.

I use the TDS card (similar program) and find that loves gives the best discount. Quick check it looks like right now

Loves Carlisle pa. Cash price $2.79. Card discount of $1.10 for a price of $1.69.

Loves Ruther glen Va. $2.45 cash. Card $1.10.

I did not have to provide any money upfront. The funds are removed directly from my account the day after I use the card. I set up a separate bank account for them to access. I just transfer the money over before a trip.

Great program and the best thing is you don't have to go to the fuel desk. Just swipe and pay.

I remember when my family was travelling through the South on our way to Florida and gas was posted as $.19/gallon. True, this was in 1958, but I remember my Dad making a big deal out of it! Times change!

Funny how a barrel of oil affects gas prices. Or, do they?

Yes, I admit that California has outrageous pricing, but Needles pricing is not representative. Kingman, AZ shows $4.90 at TA/Petro with $5.40 on the pump. We are currently in Savannah, GA and paid $4.52 with the EFS card from $5.20 on the pump.

And why is Needles pricing not representative? San Diego was about the same a few days ago. California gas, is California gas. Out of sight because of restrictions that have done nothing to stop the smog. It is the same now in LA as it was when I was a kid in the 50s. Buy along the freeway and it is $7. buy downtown and it is $5.50.

There is a whole economy thing on gas prices vs oil and the mom and pop gas stations are at the beck and call of oil companies. If you reduce pump prices, oil companies raise the supply prices. Raise the prices and oil companies drop the prices. It is not as black and white as the government would like you to believe. AND the oil coming out of the wells is NOT SWEET CRUDE which is what you see as the price of a barrel of oil. This is a big shell game with the consumer getting screwed when the walnuts are lifted.

That post you a made is from 2020 so those prices are probably correct for the Better times. All I know is I would not want to be buying fuel in Furnace Creek right now, this is current pricing.
