General RV

In south east Michigan the only close dealer that sells the Grand Design line is General Rv. I am Looking some people that have first hand knowledge pro or con on them. I have looked on line but I have found mainly upset people take the time to post a review.
Thanks I advance

Jim

I'm in NY, but if they are a member of the Better Business Bureau there might be reviews posted on that website. You's probably have to take them with a grain of salt like many that are posted, but it might give you an insight on them.

General RV does not have the best track record. Google them and you’ll see what I mean. Apparently some of their locations have been using some illegal business practices. Having said that they have thousands of happy customers and I’m sure just as many unhappy customers.

I cut myself off but had seen on line reviews and been to the BB site. I am being very cautious with them. But the closest dealer other then general Rv is close to 3 hour drive. With that said I am trying to do my home work on them to.

Might call the old Haylett RV in Coldwater. They are now a Bishs rv and I think they can order a wide range of rvs now. For that level of investment it might be worth a longer drive.

I would stay away from General RV, I live 4 miles from the Wixom location. They were good about price matching but the problems come with service. Even with 40 repair bays they are months out on repairs, then months waiting for parts and its been this way for years, long before covid. I ended up buying from Haylett RV in Coldwater which is now a Bish's dealer and sells Grand Design. When I had a few warranty issues that needed parts they shipped them to me within a week direct from Jayco since I was 140 miles away.

I follow a couple on youtube that had some issue with their door and they were down in Florida and could not get any help from their General RV dealer at home, so they went to a different Jayco dealer in FL and got it fixed from them

I wouldn't pee hard to have to walk into the GRV you're referring to in the Clem (first hand).
HOWEVER, a very close friend of mine did buy a Grand Design toy hauler from GRV in Clarkston.
They also know first hand of them at the Clem location and were very hesitant to go to the clarkston location because of that. They can't say ANYTHING bad about their entire experience with Clarkston. Their salesman was top shelf, great communication before, during, AND after. They (everyone at that location) bent over backwards for them. He and I talk every day and he told me every time he had contact with them as to what was happening and I was totally shocked. I'll find out their salesman name and pass it along to ya.

Many here in Virginia used to be Camping World. They all seemed to change to General RV overnight. No sign of CW in Central Virginia anymore. Would be real leery of doing business with them

8 months to repair a slide

This is General RV in Ashland VA. This is from my post on the dinette slide in the Super C section.

The rest of the story

This was not a supply chain.

First, the dealer was notified via email on July 20 that we had a slide issue while we were in Wyoming. They refused to look at the slide until September 30 even though part of their sales program is priority service for camping essential items (in writing) which includes slides. This is the basis of our complaint to the state AG.

Second, even after discussions between the dealer and Jayco/Entegra ( documented on the Service order emailed to me) the dealer failed to submit the authorization requests and parts requisitions to Jayco. Parts were not ordered until I requested the PO numbers on Dec 18 after I talked to Entegra. At that time only the sheet metal was requested. A cable for the side camera was not ordered until January 11. The dealer did not order a camera as recommended by Jayco (in October) until last week Friday.

Third, the dealer repeatedly tried having us pick up the RV while awaiting the camera but we refused because closing the invoice and opening a new one IMHO, would have terminated warranty repairs. The warranty expired on October 2.

That would be one way to free themselves from the bad rap that CW has, by changing names to General RV.

Camping World is still there. They might have changed names to Gander.

Speaking of dealers in Ashland, we've got an interesting story. We had looked while travelling one day and found a nice camper with the layout we wanted. Looked it over and decided that it was what we liked. We scheduled another appointment for later that week to get it. Fast forward a few days and we take our old one there and get ready to do the deal. All of a sudden, they say they didn't know we were purchasing it that day. Hello? We don't take time off of work in the middle of the week and drag a camper to another dealer just for fun. Needless to say, we were prepared to walk away and take our "old" camper back home. Well, the sales manager chased us down as we were driving away and got the shop guys to do a PDI and then a walk-through with us. How they didn't have this planned, we'll never know. That whole ordeal should have been a sign.

Fast forward a few months and we get notices of default payment along with no tags. The dealer never processed the paperwork. Then, after nearly a year, we had a few minor warranty issue crop up. Take it to a local repair shop and the manufacturer had no record of us as owners. Again, no paperwork filed.

The dealer was a smaller dealership that was purchased by Camping World, and our transaction was right after everything was finalized. Many people quit and more were hired, there was much turnover and turmoil. That is likely for the mess we encountered during this process. A few weeks before or after and all would have likely been fine.

A few years later, we purchased our current fifth wheel from a Gander RV, which is owned by Camping World. This time, everything went great and they have always been responsive when we've called on them.

Grand Design

In doing my research on grand design, there are three dealers in Michigan that carry Grand Design. General RV is one of them, Brewbakers Rv in Onaway is another one and I think the third one is in the UP. We bought our grand design from Brewbakers in Onaway. Love the dealership, love the sales people, love the service department. We bought three RVs from them now and I think that we got as good of a deal as we would’ve gotten anywhere else. Everyone is very polite and professional. In regards to service, I think they’re three weeks out right now with service repairs which is not uncommon industry wide.

The one in Birch Run has to die for sales staff. Sandy was the one we bought our first one from and when well out grew our 3 person trailer and bought a 5 person trailer no problems. If I decide to downside I will be back to get another but have decided to keep our bunk model and use the bottom bunk for storage. Otherwise Birch Run is where I tell people to go. I had a nasty sales person near Novi. So do not go there. Otherwise if you go? Find Sandy she was very helpful. As for Camping World? I think it all depends on where you go. The one in Belleville has the nicest people but is shut down until September and was sent to Chelsea. Their staff is there and very nice and helpful. I guess it all depends on where you go because the one in Golden Co? Also helpful. So I have no idea what people are talking about when it comes to CW. I love them and I love General RV. Good luck.

I purchased my Jayco at The Brownstown General RV and have gotten pretty good service at that location.
