Good Sam Membership

A comment and a question:

First the comment: Not sure whether or not this is widely known and/or standard practice, but Good Sam is currently offering FREE four year membership renewal for current and prior military members. Salesman at CW saw the word Army on my jacket, asked if I was current or prior service, and then extended my membership when I checked out.

And the question: what are folks thoughts on the GS Roadside Assistance plan? I don’t anticipate any problems as TV and TT are both new, but there’s always the unexpected and $60 seems like “cheap” insurance. Thanks in advance for the help.

Get it. New does not guarantee no trouble. That is likely a intro price. I pay a little over $100 and is a good investment IMO.

That's great news about service personnel getting the extension. I received a 3 year membership when I bought my camper from CW. My Ford came with 5 year roadside assistance plan and my camper insurance [Nationwide] also includes roadside assistance. I hope I never need any of it but, alas, I do drive a Ford. You might check your insurance policy to make sure it's not included. Honestly, I think you're right though, for $60 per year, it's cheap insurance and everything I've read about it, seems like top notch coverage.

Next time you're at CW ask about extending the membership anyway. My original membership was less than a month old and they extended it anyway - I'm now good through January 2019.

A couple of years ago we took advantage of an offer of a Lifetime membership for $149.00, regular $299.00 that included Active Firefighters in the discount list. We had just renewed for 3 years and they credited us some of the renewal charge. Might be worth a call to them Redhorse.

I just called GS membership with the info given by the OP, and the person I spoke with said she hadn't heard of this offer. She checked with her supervisor, who also had not heard of the offer. However, she said she could offer a one-time, one-year extension to me as an Army veteran at no charge, but after that, it would be the normal rate of $25 per year. Apparently, the 4-year offer was only at that particular CW, and not a nation-wide offer.

But thanks to robkelly, I got one free year that I hadn't thought to ask for. Thanks !!

The roadside assistance is well worth the price. GS will pay for towing TV and trailer when others may or may not tow the trailer or at least charge extra for it. We have used it twice and have been happy with the service people sent out and with GS in general. Both times, I received a call from GS checking to see whether anyone responded to our call for assistance and then to see if we were happy with the response. We will continue to subscribe to it.

A few years ago they started offering the lifetime membership for certain service jobs, military and over 60. I plan to stay in in so it was a buy for me.

Thanks for all the responses on the Roadside Assistance. Another item to add to the purchase list.

I had to use the roadside assistance when returning to California from Indiana in Ocotber. Wheel bearing seized up on the 5er and had to be towed from the middle of nowhere Nebraska to a shop in York, NE. Tow was about 15 miles and the bill to Good Sam was over $1200.00, sure glad I had it. It was Friday night at about 11PM by the time I got to York it was after 1AM but they got me out of there to safety.

My wife and I have a lifetime Good Sam membership and the separate roadside assistance. In 13 years of RVing we have used it many times.

Mine came with a year of Coach Net. It did not cover any thing but the trailer.

There was a promotion last year where current Good Sam life members could purchase a life membership for a family member for a huge discount. My parents bought us a lifetime membership when we bought our camper.

Dropped Platinum Roadside

We had the GS Platinum Roadside Assistance plan (Lifetime GS members) - This covered ALL of our vehicles and the TT. I dropped it when my wife's pickup had a transmission go out. We wanted it towed to a national chain with national warranty that was 38 miles from where the farm is and they refused to tow it there as they found in their computer a private transmission company less then 10 miles away - has a terrible reputation and NO LOCALS WILL USE THAT SHOP! I complained to headquarters and they did nothing but offer to pay for 10 mile tow of the pickup. I had kept roadside assistance with our vehicle insurance and they paid over half the tow bill - MUCH MORE THEN GS OFFERED! When renewal came in it was trashed and all others have been and will continue. We have full insurance on the TT through same company and it also has roadside assistance - I trust my insurance company to help me and they will pay the max if I want it towed to a shop I trust - GS won't!!!

We are Good Sam life members and also have the roadside assistance. We also choose Good Sam for our extended warranty and have the Good Sam tire protection plan. It can get confusing. When someone says that they have Good Sam, it could include a bunch of plans that are offered by Good Sam that are totally unrelated.
