grass protection/driving over lawn

Well I just picked up the new 29QBS today, LOVE IT! It is 7 feet longer than my old trailer and requires that I drive at an angle to get it in the driveway and around the house. That means that I go about 3 feet into the grass to angle around the carport and get it to the side of the yard.

The lawn is damp, as I expect it to be quite often. Driving over it caused ruts and I needed 4wd (pretty steep hill to climb). I either have to

-dig out the soil and lay down gravel (expensive, lot of work, problems with rain washing gravel down the hill, gravel addition looks tacky next to asphalt driveway)

-dig out the soil and have an asphalt addition to my driveway (REALLY expensive, but I don't have to do the work and it won't wash out)

or find another solution.

I found GrassProtecta, which is a plastic mesh that lays on top of existing grass and helps stabilize the surface so it can be driven upon. This is substantially less expensive, much easier to DIY and won't look any different once the grass grows over it.

I like this idea the best because I can easily do it and still have grass lining the driveway. Has anyone used a product like this, and if so, how did you like it?

Congrats on the new 29QBS...I really like the floorplan and how the bunkroom is laid out. Wish my bunkroom was as nice. I have no knowledge about the GrassProtecta but I looked at it and it sounds like a good product. Hopefully someone will add their experience with it. If not, let us know how it works out if you go with it.

What about something like this, keeps the look of grass but the stability of pavement. I've seen a few commercial parking lots bordered with a hollow concrete paver to do the same thing.

You could take out the soil and put in a rock base and let the grass take it back over. It would be grass that will hold you up.

Rosco and Mike, both great ideas but they require that I strip off the topsoil and do a lot of site work. I am trying my best to avoid that extra site work if I can avoid it.


Hattie, your Lowes has a product similar to what I posted, or what Rosco posted?

Our Lowe's has this in their outer parking lots, they are turf pavers and actually very easy to install (or to remove and replace such as when installing/repairing underground utilities); we love ours. Fire Departments also often have these so they are VERY heavy-duty.

Neighbor down the block did there drive way in these pavers, looks good. Personally, if it was my yard, I would do one two different things. 1st just keep driving on it every few days and pack the soil, you may have to add a bit of soil. 2nd option, this is what I probably do, dig it out, pack in class five fill. Then roll out sod on top, looks good, but it can take the weight of the TV.

I appreciate the responses... but I am trying to avoid having to dig up my yard and do a lot of work.


Does anyone have any experience with this particular product or one like it that doesn't require all the site prep?

Just drive on it....lol...when camping season arrives a guy's got to get that rig out of the yard....took a second 4 wheel drive chained to my 3/4 ton diesel 4 wheel drive to pull our rig out...needed to cover about 60 feet, made it about 45 feet...that's when we added the second 4 wheel drive truck on.

Spoon059, interesting product. You might find real world experience by talking with folks running golf courses. I'd think it's still dependent on good drainage and relatively firm ground under the mat.
