Has Anyone Experienced This...
Everywhere I have read recommends having a surge protector plugged into the camp site electrical pedestal into which you would then plug the shore power line from the RV or motorhome. So, I bought the same model that a friend who has an RV recommended. It is the Progressive Industries Portable RV Surge Protector Portable EMS-PT30X RV Surge Protector. It was a little pricey --- but if it protects the Greyhawk, then it's money well spent. We have used this surge protector since October 2019 at a half dozen camp grounds.
We were recently at a resort in Penn. All the RV sites had recently been updated and the electrical pedestal was new. I plugged the surge protector into the post and then closed the box cover. The surge protector hung down below the closed box. After the surge protector did its thing and indicated everything was "good," I plugged in the shore plug. Everything was working well.
During the night and for the next morning, we experienced a torrential downpour, remnants of Isaias. Everything was going well. The rain stopped around noon. The sky was blue. Then all the power in the Greyhawk went off. The first place I went was to the electrical pedestal. Upon investigation, the switch had flipped on the electrical pedestal. I unplugged the shore line, and then unplugged the surge protector. While doing that, I heard water sloshing around. I held up the surge protector, shook it, and it's full of water. There was no flooding so the surge protector did not go under water.
Has anyone have this happen?

I have not and leave mine in the elements all of the time but that does not mean it cannot happen. Call Progressive. I found them to be very helpful when I had a problem.

I have the same type, but 50 Amp version, and haven't had that problem either, but will double check the seal of the case next time I'm out just in case...

I looked over the unit. It clearly says for outdoor use. But it doesn’t say “water proof” or “water resistant.” The unit is sealed shut. The only possible way for water to enter it, particularly because of the way it was plugged into the pedestal and hanging, was around the top where the plug cable goes into the unit itself.
I haven’t called Progressive. But I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced something similar. What I’ve never seen at any resort or campground is anyone covering the electrical pedestal to protect the connections from the weather.

I have a PI unit that went out during our trip last week. It is showing an open ground error code. After the troubleshooting with their tech support, I filed the warranty claim and sent them the information/pictures they requested.
I was about to post that it is taking a little longer than I expected to get an answer but just found their warranty replacement email in my inbox. So, from the start of the claim until the approval was just shy of a week. The email states that I should receive the replacement in 7-10 business days.

No offense but it won't make much difference if someone else has had it happen or not concerning them replacing it. There is another thread, this week, about covering the pedestal. Some do, some don't. Personally, I see a moisture build up happening when it is covered cause more issues. Call Progressive.

I have had mine get wet inside. I notified Southwire. They have Lifetime warranty. After it dried out it appears to be working fine. Southwire told me if I have any issues, they would replace it.

After reading the reviews on Amazon regarding how uncooperative the company can be (admittedly with some skepticism) and reading the warranty that spoke about “acts of God not being covered under the warranty), we decided to give the unit to an electrician to see if it were salvageable. If he hasn’t started tearing it down, we will contact the company and see what they say. Until this incident if had performed exactly as designed. I just had no idea that it would fill up with water from rain, regardless of how torrential it was. I can understand if it had been flooded and underwater. The fact of the matter is if it had been flooded, we would have had a bigger problem than a wet surge protector.

If you reread that post you’ll see where I only put a 13 gal. bag over the pedestal when it’s going to rain, otherwise it’s in the fresh air.

For all of us OCD folk:
After reading this post, I immediately looked at my PI EMS-50PTX and saw a huge nut around the top power cord. It was hand loose. Upon loosening it completely, I saw a rubber seal. Hmmm. OCD kicked in. I got my silicone lube, slathered the bottom and top of the rubber seal and tightened the nut to "just a little" beyond hand tight. Can't hurt!!

I have had two issues with mine, 1st the hinges on the plastic cover broke, one phone call and I had new parts in less than a week; 2nd, the power cable pulled out of the big nut holding it to the case. It still functioned fine, but after I submitted a warranty claim I had a new one on my porch in 10 days, plus they didn't want the old one back so now I have a spare. As far as I'm concerned their customer service is second to none.
You are making a big $300 dollar mistake by not contacting them. Once your electrician opens the case your warranty is void.

I have not had any warranty claims with Progressive Industries but have called their support people on occasion and received excellent service. They even offered to replace a unit that wasn't performing as I expected and they knew it wasn't their issue. I've heard nothing but positive about them....

Around that nut is where I believe our surge protector leaked water during the rain. The difference is the nut on our surge protector is screwed tight. Regardless as to how tight the nut is, this is the only area that I can find where the rain water could have entered.

Can you give me some link or reference to the thread "covering the pedestal". I can't find it doing multiple searches.
Thanks

Taking your advice, I went to the Progressive web site and completed the warranty claim form and submitted it. I received a confirmation email but didn’t hear anything else, or so I thought. After week, it dawned on me that an email may have come from the company and gone to my spam folder. A quick search revealed an email from the company’s representative indicating the warranty claim had been approved and a new unit will be forthcoming. The new surge protector arrived yesterday. I’m delighted. I’m now trying to figure out how to keep the new surge protector unit from potentially filling up with rain water. I’m thinking about using Flex Seal to seal around the bolt on the top where the water entered the original surge protector.
