hello, not an RV'er yet, but we took a jayco tour

Me and the boss *will be* in the market for an RV in the next couple of years. we toured the Jayco and Nexus factories today.

So today we (the boss and I) went to the Jayco factory tour. there were about 12 people on the tour. We just went down the Melbourn line.

it was a nice tour, but honestly, I was not really impressed with the quality. The factory itself was a mess. The floors were cluttered, some of the wall panels were dented on the corners. But the units seem to come together fairly well. I was disappointed that we couldn't go down the Class A or Seneca lines.

Overall it was a nice tour, but somethings didn't add up. ie; the tour guide said the insulation in the wall was equal R-8? and the roof insulation was R-20? Being in the HVAC industry, I'd love to see their logic in those numbers. Im pretty sure you can't get R-8 out of a 1" styrofoam wall? but I could be wrong

anyway, we went from Jayco to Nexus.

We got to the Nexus plant and we thought we were the only ones on the tour, then some "old guy" showed up and said his Thor was at the factory getting some kind of repair ( he didn't specify) but he figured he would take a few tours while waiting for his rig to be fixed. So as we are waiting, being the people persons we are and most RV'ers are we strike up a conversation. Turns out the guy is actually from our hometown of Rochester, NY and he worked at Eastman Kodak for 20 years and then drove a truck for Schneider of 20 years. Now he RV's full time.

The tour was nice and the quality of Nexus seemed to be well above Jayco.

But when all was said and done, all I could think was -- I can't wait to get on the road and meet people from all over the country, I hope it's in a Nexus Class C or, if things go according to plan, a super c, Ghost or Wraith.

But I can't wait to HAVE THE TIME to meet people. Right now im in scramble mode to get everything paid off so we CAN RV full time

Someday in the next couple years, I'll be out there and I hope to meet a bunch of you guys.

Have a great night

It sounds like you allocated a lot of time to research just what you and the boss want which is always a good thing. Enjoy the journey.

If you can swing it, try renting if you aren't experienced. I love RVing but regret not buying what I needed when we started out. Even if you can't rent the exact model you want just getting some similar type experience is great.

And you will get a chance to meet others and talk to them at campgrounds. I bet every one you meet will give you working opinions on what they have and what they wished they had purchased.

If you post the model(s) you are considering there a plenty here to talk about them and answer questions.

Welcome to the forum.

Keep in touch as you plan and finally buy an RV. And, despite the name, Jayco ownership isn't really required.

Welcome to the Forum... By all means, you are in the best position to shop for a Super C - having some time before you are ready, allows you to actually climb in / out the different models. (please compare getting your wife into the passenger seat of the Ghost and the Seneca)

These subtle differences become major differences once it is YOURS!

We also took a factory "tour", while in Middlebury this summer. We popped in unannounced to have some minor (?) warranty work done. Being rather minor, they did take time to fix our problems, a broken metal face plate trim around the microwave, 2 led lights, one of which had started acting like a strobe light. They even let us hook up to 30 amp power for the night.

Anyway about the tours, we went on a tour of the Seismic toy hauler/Pinnacle/North Point high end 5th wheel factory. We would have preferred the Jay Flight line since we have that trailer.

The tour was interesting but had little relevance, except in the most general way.

Since we already had our Jayco, the factory tour wouldn't have caused us not to buy.

Having years to make a educated decision is the way to do it and also the way to save your hard earned cash. Getting debt free or as close as you can at retirement will make the journey much more pleasant.

If you can eliminate what you don't want as in TT, 5er or mh, then you can zero on in on the size and type. Sounds like you are going that route already.

In our case what we end up with is a fluid decision because we have camped so long our needs have changed.

One point in Jayco’s favor is the 2 year warranty which gives you a couple full camping seasons to work all the bugs out if you aren’t full timing. And Jayco Motorized CS is outstanding in Middlebury but you do have to make an appointment well in advance. Otherwise you might want to look for a good reputable dealer if that type of support is important to you. Good luck in your search and in whatever rig you end up with. It’s a very rewarding lifestyle.

thanx for the replies.

when we do buy an RV, whichever one we get, we will be full-time RVing. We are going to downsize to, next to nothing, we will have the clothes on our backs and some pots and pans (and a couple of folding chairs and table) and my hand tools.

Im an HVAC Contractor and I plan to help my fellow travelers with their Dometic/Norcold/Coleman air conditioners, refrigerators, furnaces, and electric issues to supplement our retirement income.

I already have all the tools necessary to repair most issues.

so let the good times roll
