Help a Veteran and veteran RV'r

Bought a used Designer Legacy for use at seasonal site campground. Shore power seems to operate everything even without the two deep cycle batteries connected. I am baffled at that, because usually everything is 12VDC operated and you need the batteries to be working to have lights, heat, water heating and so forth, especially slide-outs to operate. This Fall when I attempted to bring in the slide-outs in for winter, I had to disconnect the battery to get it to work.
If anyone can give me a clue as to what the heck is going on, I certainly would be grateful.

Without batteries your running off the inverter. When you added the battery it was most likely dead or close to it..it pulled all the juice and nothing was left to run your slide etc.

At least that is what I believe happened. Good Luck.

Same here, take the battery somewhere and have it load tested. You will likely need a new one.

When I was just out of college and recently married, replacing a battery was like buying a new car. We did anything to limp along with a dying battery. Eventually after having to get jumps from strangers I broke down and bought a new one.

Today a decent deep cycle might cost $150 and if taken care of will last 5 years or more. Why do people do like I did 50 years ago and try to limp along with an old and probably failing battery? Bite the bullet and I suspect your problem will be solved and as an extra benefit you will have lights, fridge, and heat for a night if the shore power goes out.

I'm not sure he is limping it along as much as trying to find out what caused the slide to not work with the battery hooked up.

Sorry, its pretty basic to determine that a battery is dead or not taking a charge. Given the circumstance and given it is a used RV, the first thing I would do is check the battery.

The OP should take both batteries to an Auto Zone or similar store and have them check the battery. If the batteries check ok, then I would suspect the onboard converter.

At a seasonal site, I would suggest that one decent 12volt deep cycle would be all that the owner needs.

I wonder if the batteries were wired backwards? What messes many up is the black wire is NOT ground, it is Positive. White is ground/Negative.
