Hey parts department, check out the internet!

I work for a small business and most of that business is from local repeat customers. Having said that, I realize that this is a global economy and the second I stop providing competitive prices, I'm done. So why can't my local RV dealer get that? Everything in their 892 page catalog is significantly more expensive than on the web, and most of that will get shipped to my door for free. And I'm not talking about a couple of dollars. Most items are at least 50% more.

I want to give my business to my local RV dealer, but I can't just throw money away. I'm thinking about having a conversation with the parts manager, but you never know how they might take that. Is your local guy competitive with pricing? How much do you shop around before making a gear purchase?

I always go on line and I went on line to buy my TV. Got 5 on line bids for my VW Touareg and would never have been able to get that price if I just walked into a dealership.

Just like marinas, the RV dealers assume that if you can afford an expensive RV, boat, motorcycle, ATV, etc. then you can afford to pony up for parts at the dealer. I'll let the wealthy support the local dealer and I'll support Amazon.

Being in Canada it's even worst, lucky me I'm only 45min from the boarder. I had this discussion with some local parts store before and none of them can compete with those prices online, I know I don't encourage my local economy but money is hard to earn so I take time to shop wisely, like you say 50% and even saw 75% off for the same item!!!

Mostly dealers don't get because people buy from them in-spite of the prices.

Camping World is the one that amazes me. It seems that on MOST items they sell the pricing formula is LIST (MSRP) + COST + 10%. Very few items are reasonably priced. Even their "Club Member" prices are too high.

My dealer is a wholesaler - however parts are list. They offer a 10% discount card to people who purchased their TT from them (a loyalty card)

My dealer gives 10% discount for the first year. His discount prices are still uncompetitive.

I try to buy everything locally if I can, but the prices have to be somewhat cost-competitive. My salary has been frozen since 2008, so I have to be conscious of prices. If the locals make no attempt to compete with their prices, then they don't deserve my business.

I find that it depends on the item. Also many of the dealers have sub contract companies who manage the stock on the shelves as well as provide the catalogs to them. So the pricing falls to the contractor and not the dealer.

I would think that if you approached it from the standpoint that you are trying to buy from them but can't justify the huge markup for several items maybe they will listen.

They are here and have the part you want. You pay for that luxury to have it now and not wait for things to ship. Who knows how long they will have to hold on to it before it sells? You also have to pay for the costs of doing business and it is a special business, Amazon sells everything, not just RV parts.. Maybe it's the small business man inside me speaking.

As an Amazon prime member and the fact that I live in a rural town away from every big store, I get most everything from Amazon. It sometimes amazes me what they stock. And you get 95% of it in 2 days right to your door.

I like the catalog.... it's good reference materials for the things I want and need. When I find something in it, then I shop online....my dealer has a pretty good stock on hand, but you're right the prices are almost double at least.

Closest RV dealer of any kind is 70+ miles away, so no dilemma here. I shop online...

When I was shopping for my Honda EU6500is generator last year, I checked with every Honda dealer in the area. They all quoted me something close to MSRP, in the range of $4500.

I bought it from Max Tool in California for $3789, paid zero for shipping, and they saved me the sales tax. I simply couldn't ignore the $600+ difference in price, plus the nearly $400 in tax. I realize the local guys can't do anything about the sales tax, but they could have at least been competitive on the price. If Max Tool can sell it for $3789 and make a profit, then the local guys can, too. I would have eaten the tax if the prices had been similar.

And I don't want to hear about the overhead for the local guys. The online retailers all have similar overhead. I'll guarantee that Max Tool has a lot more overhead trying to run a business in California than any of the local guys do trying to run a business in Texas.

I find that some stuff is cheaper at the dealer. Some is more. Some is the same. I can go to my dealer and ask questions and get an answer right away. On the other hand some stuff is a no-brainer and cheaper on the 'Net.

What baffles me is going into an established RV dealer and asking about LED replacement bulbs for 921 bulbs. 921s are the basic standard bulb that comes with most TT, aren't they? All I've gotten so far are the blank stare, or We have these replacement LED light units for $80+ each. Jeez, all I want is the bulb!

Internet, here I come.

+1

I HATE not having access to shopping, but I LOVE that Amazon fills that void for me; it makes living in the country just that much easier.

What turned me away from My buy local Campworld dealer was the 2 light fixtures that Campworld displays but not stocked in that store(Burlington ). They ordered it in from their main distribution center and had the audacity to charge me freight. Freight was $13.00 and shipped with their regular delivery. Do me once shame on you, do me twice shame on ME!
