Hidden emergency keys

I'm planning on taking a set of the trailer keys to a locksmith some time in the new year and having an extra set or two made up just in case. I had actually lost a set of keys for our old hybrid once -- never found them again -- but fortunately I had a spare set in the truck. Not an experience I want to repeat. Then I got to thinking, is there a way of hiding a set of emergency keys on the outside of the trailer, some place out of sight, easy to get to, and won't get lost? You can get those magnetic key holder things for your car, and I know there's plenty of exposed steel on a travel trailer to stick it on, places like underneath the frame, inside the bumper, and so on. Has anyone done this?

I keep mine behind the refrigerator grill ( up and out of the way). It's just for my convince because these trailers are super easy to break into.

Yes, we use the magnetic hide-a-key approach well secured inside one of the storage areas BUT we don't use the 751 keys (that almost every camper has) has as we've replaced all the storage locks with combo cams.

My wife and I each carry a key. So we'd both have to loose our key to have an issue.

Yes, we hide keys on everything. Camper, house , garage and autos.

When you get over 60 you can't have to many spare keys. I generally use those carabineer type snap rings that can be snapped into a remote area that only me and the crook can find. LOL

I have a 751 key on every key ring. I can't remember how may times I have helped fellow campers who have lost their hatch key.
So many do not know that they are universally the same key industry wide.

Very true. One of the first mods I did was to change out the hatch lock cylinders to match the door key with help from this site. Nice to have one key for all hatches and the door. And now my hatches won't open with the universal 751 key...

I keep a complete set of keys for all the trailers locks in an extra large magnetic key holder hidden on the frame of the trailer. The standard size ones won't fit all the keys.

In addition, I'll probably hide a spare door key in a storage area. Should be easy to find (Norty1? ) or someone else with a 751 key.

We have NEVER had a problem with anyone unlocking our hatch in over 15 years of camping all over the US of A, or for that matter even taking something that was laying out in plain sight.

BTW, takes less than 15 minutes per storage lock to switch it out ...

We have discussed this in the past. Anyone can open any hatch lock in less time that it takes to get the key out.

I'd like to do this. Can you share some links for what you used? Or link me to your write-up or something?

I have too many keys, and it's getting annoying.

Well sort of! What if you loose yours and the wife's are locked in the TV? We were in Bristol a few years ago for the spring race. Stopped at a sub shop for lunch and wife left her purse in back seat under a blanket. I was having an issue with a turnsignal so when I got out I left my key in the ignition so I could get out and check to see front or rear lite out?? Made the mistake to close my door and as the wife exited her side she "was helping" and hit the lock button. Bingo truck locked and both sets inside. A sore subject why women have to carry a purse but constently don't want to take it with them into a store or on a hike.

You do not need an oversized key box to hide your emergency key [s] because all you need to hide OUTSIDE is the RV door key, as you can hide the other back up keys inside the TT. We keep a set behind the fridge grill but now thinking that's like putting a house key under the door mat. Maybe the first place a bad guy would look. Any way think my new plan is a simple mag box between the propane tanks or on the TT frame somewhere.

Only I keep a set of truck keys. So we're in trbl if something happens to them. We both keep a trailer key (same key opens door and hatches) with us all the time.

One great/bad feature of the newer Fords is the combo keypad on the drivers side door. It has saved me a few times when I could not remember where I hid the key.
They did not put any other keyed locks on the truck except the drivers door.

Keep a trailer door key in a black magnetic box att to the frame. Keep a door opener in the trailer in case I lock my truck key in the ignition. I have matching cam locks for my compartments.
