How do you keep caulk fresh?
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to keep an open caulk tube fresh, or how to keep the tip from hardening. I bought a tube of Dicor at the end of the season last year and did a little touch-up work before winter. I put a 3in. screw in the end and thought that should work. Took the screw out today and can't get anything out at all. I'm thinking I should cut open the tube and use what I can. Any thoughts?

I do pretty much the same thing. Either a nail or screw in the opening but then wrap the end with electrical tape. It helps a little but won't keep it for a year or longer. Maybe we can both learn something here from someone else

I simply use a piece of duct tape, making sure it's wrapped tight and sealed across the opening. Never tried it with Dicor, but it works well with caulking and 5200 sealant.

How do you keep caulk fresh?
I used Saran Wrap and duct tape for many years. A year ago I saw a plug of 2 caps that slip on the end in a Lowes. So far they are as good.

I've kept Proflex usable for a month or two by doing this:
1) Put a nail at least as large in diameter as the hole at the end into the nozzle
2) Put a big gob of plumber's putty completely over the nozzle and the top of the nail
3) Put the whole thing into a freezer thickness zip lock and close it up - while expressing out as much air as you can
4) Wrap a piece of masking tape around the bag to close it around the tube
5) Refrigerate it
6) Let it warm before you use it. After removing the nail, you may need to take a coat hanger wire and push it through the nozzle into the tube.
Even with all this, the caulk will eventually become un-useable.

I've kept caulk now for 3 months buy taking some Saran wrap, doubling it over, putting it on the tip of the tube of caulk, and than jamming the caulk tube cap back on.

What I have had really good luck with is wire nuts, depending on the tube design a red, or yellow (14-12 gauge wire size) typically work. Sometimes I use a large grey if needed. They seem to seal it up gas tight and the caulk seems to be good a year or more.

I use tin foil on the tip of the tube... it goes nice with my tin foil hat..

I talked with a coworker today about open caulk and he does almost the same thing except he puts saran wrap over the end and then screws down the wire nut. Same as above, he also stated he's had caulk stay fresh for almost a year that way. I think I'll give the wire nut thing a try. Thanks for all the suggestions.
