How Do You Transport E-Bikes?

For those of you that pull a trailer and like to take your e-bikes along with you, how do you transport the bikes? We have a 27DSRL and were interested in purchasing two full size e-bikes that weigh about 70lbs each. Although we have a pick up truck, it has a tonneau cover over the bed that we prefer to keep closed. This plus the fact that we carry other equipment (extra diesel fuel, chairs, tool box, etc.) back there so there isn't enough room for two full sized bikes. I'm just looking for ideas. I'm prepared to buy folding bikes if that's what it takes. Thank you for any suggestions you have.

Jeff

The Lectric XP folds and will fit in a 50 gallon plastic or rubber tote and can be hauled that way with no lid. They will be higher than the tote but I'm not sure how much but would probably fit under your cover.

Since you have a TT, you could always get a rack for over the tonneau cover like this:

That's the exact bike I'm looking at if I can't find a way to transport full size bikes. Thanks.

Number of options.

I would look at having a welded 2" receiver hitch placed on the back of the TT. Then buy a good rack, that you can mount your bikes too. Please note, there is a lot of bouncing back there, and can be hard on bike racks. I would look at the luggage carrier style bike rake.

Might even ask the welding shop if they can make a good light weight rack that can hold up to the stresses.

You might consider having a welder reinforce and brace the dump hose tube and at the same time weld a 2 inch receiver to the new bracing for a sturdy bike rack. Just make sure the new receiver is placed in the proper position for the bikes. If need be you can put the spare in the truck bed.

I used the 50 ga rubber tote for both our electric bikes and stored them in the back of the truck between the cab and hitch,....covered w/ tarp...over course of two months of course the tarp disintegrated...didn't have problem with clearance of the front cap and the bikes/tubs when turning, but it did block my view from
the hitch/king pin alignment when hitching...so decided to just stow the two
in my wife's car (follow vehicle) now when we travel...better to stow them, get's them out of the weather, have the room in the back of the Mini Cooper, and saves on weight from the back of the truck. Now we are looking at one of the robust
hitch mount e-bike racks to put on back of Fifth Wheel hitch... adds about 160 lbs when both bikes are mounted plus the mount weight... but man are they expensive... haven't pulled the trigger on that yet, but think that will be the route we go...

We have 2 Rad Rovers and each weighs 64 lbs and have found no real good solutions to this. Did a bunch of research and found the trailer bumper is not an option as most trailer bumpers are only rated for 100 lbs which includes the spare tire. Looked into have the bumper reinforced but according to our Jayco Rep, it would void the warranty so decided against that (at least until the warranty expires). Also looked at putting a rack over the truck bed as someone else suggested, but being a little older, picking up a 63# bike and lifting into an elevated rack is no easy task. So at this point, we are putting the bikes inside the trailer. It is a little bit of a pain if we need to get inside the trailer before stopping for the day but it works. I do tie them in place so they do not fall over or flop about and cause damage inside. Once we get past warranty, I will have a 2” receiver bracket that attaches to the frame welded into place. Note, if you get a bike rack, make sure it is rated for trailers as there are only a couple that are expressly made for the extra bouncing that occurs at the end of a trailer -most bike racks will not survive on a trailer. Cheers!

We have a couple of Giant e-bikes. One goes at the foot of the bed the other passenger side of bed. wrap a couple blankets around them and we’re good to go.

See if they make a front hitch mount for your TV. Slide a bike rack in it and ride with the bikes on the front. That's what I did. I put 2 bikes on the front of the TV and 2 bikes on the rear of the 5er. I did need a drop shank to lower the bikes out of my field of vision and have had no problems.

The folding E bikes are awesome for camping. When folded, two of them will fit in the back seat of a newer F150 crew cab. Keeps them out of sight, secure and out of the weather. Unless you can fit full profile bikes in your trailer, or your truck bed has a cap, I think the folding bikes are the way to go!
