How do you transport your extra propane tank?

I need to reduce my hitch weight. One of the easier things I can do is remove a propane tank stored on the rack in front of the trailer. But I still want to carry an extra tank. Can a propane cylinder be transported safely in the bed of a capped pick-up truck?

Have you already removed the spare tire? I think I would consider that first, that is my plan.

Not yet, but I'm going to. I weighed it a couple of days ago - 41 pounds.

When I carry a 20# propane tank in the back of my car or truck. I place it inside a plastic milk crate. It slips and is held tight. Then I use a bungee or a rope and tie the crate to a tie down point in the vehicle.

Thanks, Jagiven. That's most likely what I will do. When I added the second tank I didn't realize how much hitch weight was a factor with the 17Z. I might put a 30# back on the rack and carry a 20#, or stay with 2 - 20's; one in the bed of the truck.

I carry my extra propane the same way Jagiven does. I use a tie down and secure the tank so its not sliding around the bed.

Yes those crates are a perfect fit, and also give the tank stability when using it at the campsite particularly if you use a propane tree and lantern.

I hope you cover the exposed propane hookup when you remove the tank- Dirt and moisture will enter the piping system and create more problems than imagined- JMHO- DD

If you remove a tank from the tongue and put it in the back of the truck I don't think you would accomplish very much. I carry my spare tank in a box on the rear of the trailer.
