All this talk of what the tanks say is nice. But what do you do if your tank won't talk to you, or even lies? We are pretty sure how long it takes until we reach the point of "Dump Now, or else". It would be so nice to have gauges that work. But it is a straight down to visitablly check, regardless of how gross it is.

How full is full? (black tank)

The only tank that I watch is the gray. When it nears full, I dump both. I first dump an additional five to ten gallons of water into the black before I do.
