How many of you cover your A/C for winter?

For those of you that live in cold, snowy climates in winter - do you put a cover on your roof mounted A/C or not? What's your reasoning?

Yes.

The dealer threw in the cover.
It can't hurt.

Mine's covered to protect it from the elements and UV rays. The shroud can get get brittle over time from the exposure....it also helps to keep it clean.

I buy a new tarp every couple of years when the farm and ranch store has their 1/2 price sale. I just think covering the roof/AC that way will prevent water from entering the interior on a flat roof TT if we get a heavy year of snow. It has plenty of ventilation. My friend invested in a total cover top and sides and in 3 months the wind had destroyed it. This is the cheaper alternative and so far it works well.

I contacted Airxcel some year ago with the same question. An air conditioner does not NEED to be covered. A cover that traps moisture is worse that not covering it.

I never covered mine through several Ohio winters, and didn't have any problems. All that said, protecting a TT from the elements with the RIGHT cover has to be a good thing.
I always try to stay a step ahead of Mother Nature with preventative maintenance. My reasoning for not covering was you still have to do the maintenance anyway.

I cover my whole camper with a expedition cover bought from E-bay going on its fourth year and still holding up well. I do cover because where I park my TT is right next to a large row of white pine trees. its nice to uncover in the spring and it is still as clean as it was when I covered it in the fall.

Dad covers his in the cold to keep some of the heat inside. I have not covered mine, but I don't use it in the winter/cold months for extended periods of time.

Nope, never covered any of my TT's A/C here in Michigan, and I tend to lean towards minimizing the areas critters can nest.

In the case of my home A/C unit the manufacture recommended to not totally cover the A/C (top/sides) and said at the most only cover the top of the A/C......., so in the case of the TT A/C the existing plastic outer enclosure does a good job of protecting the unit over the 'top'.

Haven't covered any since we installed our first one in 1979, never had a problem.

My concern (I live in Central Florida) is the summer time heat and humidity. The RV dealer strongly suggested I buy and use a full cover for my camper. They stated the summer UV's can cause drying, fading, and cracking. I've been looking for a full cover, one that "breathes", yet keeps the damaging sun UV's to a minimum while it's parked and not in use.

I would agree that in the southern states where the UV can be at it's worst, protecting the entire top of an RV while in outdoor storage would be recommended whenever possible.

Bucko, from what I have seen of covers you should look into the ADCO brand. If you have long, pointy gutter extensions you can prevent them from puncturing the cover by cutting a slits in tennis balls and sliding them over the sharp objects.

Excellent idea! I do indeed have those rain gutter extentions, and until reading your response, never thought about what damage they could do in the way of ripping a cover.

Thanks! I owe you a beverage of choice should I ever see you in person1

Put my ac cover on yesterday, along with my wheel/tire covers for the winter.
The covers came with a camper I bought a few campers ago and I just kept them. Not really sure I have a reason to use them, other than I have them...Cant hurt I guess...

We're in Minnesota and will be storing our TT at an outside storage faciliity where we won't have access to it during the winter. Should we be concerned with snow load and with that maybe covering the AC?

I covered my AC unit, and wheels. That's it.

I'd do more if the bottom of my checking account was a little deeper, maybe next year.
