How much hitch?
I'm picking up our 2015 X18D on Saturday. I bought an Equalizer 1,000/10,000 hitch. After doing some research, I'm now concerned that it is too much hitch for the TT. Should I be? I don't want to install the hitch if it is going to be too much for the trailer?

Hello,
I'm new to the site today and am just trying to familiarize myself. Also I am new to owning my first TT last month.
I am assuming that is a feather lite and approx a 5000lb trailer loaded with water and camp gear. Is that a 4point sway equalizer? I would think that's a bit excessive myself. But you may be able to set the bars up to not have as much pressure/sway.
I may be completely wrong, as I know too much and too little can equally be troublesome. However I tend to lean to the too much more than the too little.
Good luck with everything. Congrats on the new TT!

Thats a pretty light trailer. Are you sure you need a WDH at all? What is the tongue weight?

Fully loaded the tongue weight of that trailer is probably going to be not much more than 500#. I would have gone with the 600# bars. Using too heavy of spring bars may make it ride rougher than using properly sized bars.
I know some of the Equal-i-zer bars are interchangeable, but I'm not sure which ones. Contact Progress and they will let you know. They have very good customer service. If they are interchangeable, I would get the 600# bars and keep the 1,000# bars in case you upgrade down the line.

You may not need the bags inflated if it's that light. The WDH will probably handle the sag..especially with 1000lb. bars. That being said, you could probably go lighter. I had a 05 F150 5.4L and towed a 4000lb. cargor trailer and never had the need for a WDH, just sway control and the truck handled it perfectly. jm2c.

I'm returning the 1000/10,000 Equalizer. I've done a lot of research and talked to a local Hitch Crafters, and the consensus is that the 1000/10,000 is way over kill, and will lend to a rough ride. The gentleman at Hitch Crafters also mentioned that sway control is likely not needed on this trailer. He said he only recommends it for people who tow a lot and do big milage. Other than that, 5-6 trips a year doesn't warrant sway control as long as you have a good weight distribution set up. He sells Eaz Lift, but didn't push anything on me. Just a good informative food for thought conversation. I think I'm going to go 600lb WDH that has a sway option. Then if I think I need sway control, I can add it.

I had a 2800lb. pop-up and needed sway control. It's just safety insurance.

Since you already bought it, just keep it. You'll be fine. I tow a X23B (GVW 5000lbs) with a 1400/14000 setup and have had no issues. I didn't intend to buy the largest size they had, but didn't realize it until after the dealer did the installation....
***EDIT: Haha...I replied before I saw your most recent post...

x2 You may not know you need it until it's too late. You can get sway at any highway speeds, whether you are towing 5 days or a half hour to get to your destination. That's like saying you don't need seat belts if you just take short trips. It's up to you, but I'd get something with good sway control built in.

Looks like I'm late, but I really like my Anderson hitch. One hitch for all trailer weights, sway control built in, and I can back with it still hooked up.
I also suggest the sway control, semi's can really move a trailer when they go by.

Checking out the Andersen. Seems to have a cult following! There are several good brands, just need to decide on one.
