How to thwart those thieving burglars

by Bob Difley

RVers, and especially those who tend to camp out in the hinterlands, are often far from any possible response from law enforcement and need to be cautious about bad guys. Your rig can be well beyond the possibility of a thief being caught in the act.
Safety can be broken down into two issues: personal safety and protection from burglary. Here are some ways to deter or prevent the chances of break-ins when you are boondocking and away from your rig, auto touring, or going to town for supplies, for instance.
You can take some basic security measures to thwart any but a dedicated thief, which you are not likely to run up against. For instance, did you know that many RV lockers have the same locks, which can be opened with any key with the CH751 identity. Check yours. If that’s what you have, change your locks.
Additional easy security considerations include:
  • Close blinds and drapes when you’re gone so the curious can’t see what you have inside.
  • If you don’t have an electronic security system, pick up a small red LED light from Radio Shack and mount next to your entry door controlled by a switch on the inside. When you go out, turn it on — it's power requirement is negligible. It looks like a security system is turned on.
  • Do not leave anything valuable like a portable generator outside if you are going to be gone long, unless it is secured with a heavy duty chain.
  • Don't tell strangers in town where you are camped.
Most thieves are products of opportunity — when it is easy for them to take something. Keep your valuables out of sight and follow these few pointers — removing the opportunity — and it will prevent most grab-and-run thefts.

Our first RV (fifth wheel) we purchased used, had a keypad with flashing LEDs by the door that was installed by the previous owner. Didn't do anything, but it looked real enough................... Only maintenance was to occasionally change the battery that powered it.

My battery box and both propane tanks are chained and padlocked to the trailer, after an attempted battery theft while overnighting at a truck stop. Sad that it has to come down to that. A 1911 is also an excellent theft deterrent and one goes with me everywhere I go.

On a similar note, I love the people that have the wooden signs hanging in front of their camper stating their name and town. I'm sure 75% of the people camping in the area here live 25 miles or less from the campground. Can you make it any more obvious that you're not home?

Or on the forums. I don't post any pics or info about a trip until I get back. It's very easy to get basic info on people. For example, I'm a single guy and am on some dating websites. I was talking to one girl who only told me her first name and where she worked. Within a few minutes I was able to find her salary, her last name, her maiden name, where she exactly worked, where she lived, when she bought her house and the price, a picture of the house, where the ex husband lived, her pinterest page and her entire family tree dating back to the mid 1800's. It wasn't hard, I didn't pay a cent for anything and I probably could have found more too.

And for the record, I've been burned in the past by girls I met online so now I do some research before meeting them in person. I'm not stalking, I'm just looking out for myself before a meetup.

Like the idea of the blinking red light mimicking an active alarm. My 2 80 to 100 lb dogs inside typically will keep strangers [and many friends] from entering the TT when we're gone. Otherwise follow the advise of keeping valuables out of sight and secured. Keep in mind that if you're in a CG your fellow campers will have plenty of time to recon your site. A good idea to keep stuff out of site unless you are using it. My Honda goes with me in the back of the truck if we're going to be gone for a while. Neighbors who you have taken the time to meet will also help to keep strangers out of your site. I have been known to set up a cheap motion alarm that is focused on the entry to the TT. Locate the alarm where it can be heard outside since it will let the visitor know they have been detected. The best defense is to keep a clean campsite and don't get out all your stuff just to get it out. I always keep a couple 4x6 tarps to cover things just to keep out the prying eyes.

Have never been a 1911 guy, my choice is a G21 that will be on my person when we drive into the campsite after our sidetrip. Dogs [big or otherwise] will work just about a well as any alarm system. Amazing how many people are afraid of our furry friends.

We don't carry anything in the camper or in the basement storage that can't be easily and fairly cheaply replaced. And we leave the storage areas unlocked. I would much rather replace a ladder or a chair or a cooler than have damage done to the camper from someone trying to get in. In over 30 years of camping, we have never had a problem with theft. We also make it a point to get acquainted with our close neighbors when possible, which seems to help.

I'm one of those folks with the wooden sign with our names on it and the city we live in. If someone is bored enough to try and find "moe & peg" in our city of 250,000 people well good luck.

I am more worried about theft when I am at home. The HTT sits on the street all week. In the summer my TV sits in front of it, except when I take it to work. So anyone who pays any attention can tell when I am gone. The only thing is I do not normally drive the TV to work. My tanks are chained, but the cheap battery that came with it is not.

At the CG, we lock the door, but rarely the hatches. We actually have a spot in one of the hatches where we stash a door key. Our dog, the best protection ever, super friendly but looks extremely aggressive, ears like radars. Things that we do not want to grew legs and wonder off are always put away after being used.

As for keeping valuable safe inside the TT, I have made two spots in the TT that can store valuables, one is a large spot for things like purses, and computers, and other is for small items like my wallet or extra cash, totally out of sight and most likely no one would even guess that there is a spot to put those items. An ounce of preventions is worth avoiding months of headaches.

I had a relative who stoped at a show in Branson.
The guy showing people where to park told them he had a special place out back to park motor homes.
You guessed it,when they came out all their valuables were gone.
To this day they blame the guy that parked them out back, where he couldnt be seen breaking in.

I agree with tinlizzie... have been camping on way or another for 50+ years, never had anything stolen. I leave all my doors storage doors unlocked at the campgrounds, but I will lock those if for some reason I need to park in a Walmart parking lot and go into the store.

I changed all the compartment locks. A large screwdriver will still let someone who wants in, in, but not going to let everyone who has a 751 key just open up my basement, power room or propane closets.

Beyond that I'm not worried about it. If someone has to steal like that, then they need it more than I do. Leave me a note and I will send you a check too.......
