Hybrid Bunk Ends - Plastic Trim Cracks

There are several threads here about hybrid bunk ends cracking at the plastic trim where the screws penetrate the plastic, including mine. I know Jayco installs the bunk ends with no pre-drilled holes, glue or washers, just the screws - I am guessing, taking Jayco are in the knowing on installing these bunk ends-as per manufacture installation instructions, they have all been installed correctly. Does anybody know who manufactures the bunk ends? Again, this seems to be a common problem with these bunk ends--- Thank you

Got a reply from Jayco: "Veada" - I am guessing Veada Industries (Veada) provides the canvas component for the bunk ends - Lippert Components Subsidiary (LCI) completed the acquisition of Veada - I am requesting the installation instructions from Jayco - from the threads, the Jayco 2015 catalog lists the trim sewn on the canvas as 0181878 Trim, J white poly tent - my question to the great folks on this Forum - does Jayco sew the trim onto the canvas as part of the installation or did Veada provide the complete canvas with the trim attached?

I just had both of mine (X23B) replaced under warranty and I think the tags are still on them. I'll try to remember to check next time I get it out of storage, maybe later this week.

BTW, there's one easy mod I made that I'm hoping will prevent it happening again. I drilled two extra holes in the extension poles (making them about 1" shorter), as they were already on their shortest setting and were still stretching the canvas way too much IMO. Now there's the slightest bit of slack in the roof canvas, but it's not pulling at the corners nearly as much. Takes maybe ten minutes total for both poles. So far, so good.

Thank you for the reply - Excellent idea on shorting the extension poles - mine too are on the last hole - that is great they replaced the canvas under warranty - did they (Jayco through the dealership) install the replacement canvas the same way without pre-drilling the holes for the attachment screws that penetrate the poly trim and are their cracks or signs or stress (the material enlarged around the screw area) around the penetration area? Our research indicated the material or bunk fabric was supplied by ABC Industries, Inc. - still looking for the manufacture of the poly trim. Our engineer would like to see the performance specs on the trim material. It is great that they, I am guessing Jayco is replacing the canvas on their dime; however, is the problem truly fixed - is the new canvas bunk end with time going down the same road with the cracks and separation. It appears from the threads and my experience, some are not making the 5-year warranty period and some are coming out of the manufacture's assembly line with the cracks and as you stated, which I too have experienced, the poles are an inch to long;therefore, placing an extra stress on the trim or the attached area when the tent is expanded.

Further examination indicated the screws were torqued to the point of fracturing the poly trim and in some cases penetrating through the trim -- this was done on both end bunks with heavy fractures at the corners --- this seems to be very common reading the treads - any opinions on how long this will last? Now, on the poles- I am at the end of the adjustment - the outer section would have to be cut-off an inch to allow the inner section movement to drill the hole.

Check out post #14 here: https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...ent-49018.html

Depending on how you feel about the look of the coax clips it may not work for you. I did the same last year and am very happy so far. No holes in the plastic means nowhere for the cracks to start.

I used finishing washers to stop mine from going further.

Pushed it together and tightened the screw back up, works and looks good so far.
I'm not going to replace the ends if I don't have to

Jayco's reply to my emails: "With the trailer being out of warranty, if anything for these issues is under warranty, it will be through the vendor. In this case, LCI. " So, as of 8/16/21, I am awaiting a reply from LCI--- any thoughts or experience (as some would say "bets")? The trailer is still within the 5-yr warranty for the bunk ends.

I like the coax clips - I would paint them white along with the screws. Did you use sealant between the J-Lock and the attachment wall? How did you do the upper screws? Mine does not have a lot of room at the top with the trim. I am still waiting on LCI --- the main problem with the warranty timeline, as with most things during the COVID-19 lock downs etc., our camper was in lock down mode for about 1 1/2 -2 years - so nothing was done for repairs or even use. So now we are trying to get some warranty work or just work done to go camping - hopefully LCI can help out! Again, thank you for the information!

re: I was trying to obtain instructions directly from Jayco on the factory canvas installation. This is a quote from one of the emails I received yesterday from Jayco - : "Our factory production line does, but we do not make pop-ups or canvas based trailers anymore."

Thank you,

Jayco Towables Product Support Product Support Specialist

Again, I have been trying to get the factory installation instructions, if someone has the Jayco installation instructions for bunkend canvases - PLEASE POST! Thank you

I didn't paint mine but I could see why you would. I didn't use any sealant sinceit is interior and the screws go into the aluminum tube around the opening - the screws are short enough to not penetrate the exterior wall.

I'll have to double check how I did the top clips and get back to you on it.
