We travel 95 to head south with our trailer. We can remember when 95 was first built. It has to this day been safe for our travel trailer. The road is full if crappy so called repairers. I have a 17’ expandable and it bounces all over. We have sway bars and when trucks go by it is fine. When we get off of 95 we stop get out and put everything back in it’s place. What a mess. When we see the Delaware line you don’t need a billboard telling you you crossed the line. In pa. Our gas tax is high. They don’t spend the money on the roads.

I hear you. Pennsylvania has the highest gas taxes from what I hear. You would they would have the nicest roads!

The Federal Gas tax has been the same since 1993. It is 18.4 cents a gallon. It is hardly high.

Your State gas tax could be high and yes States do fund Interstate repairs (even though construction was with Federal funds)

I 95 in our area is not only a joy with little traffic , it is smooth. North of Bangor you can play soccer or hockey on it in season without getting run over. The big issue is moose collisions.

So there are several 95's ranging from sheer terror to beautiful.

We have been south on it from SC to FL.. We avoid the area the OP is referring to as we don't like traffic and are not used to it and can do an end run around via I 81.

PennDOT has a long history of mismanagement.

My biggest problem with I95 is Maryland. While the road is good there is Baltimore and then DC. After crossing into Delaware I follow 301 across the Bay Bridge and through Waldorf and Bowling Green. While Waldorf has traffic lights and too many shopping centers it beats the two beltways.

I have run into bad roads everywhere. Right now I thought Illinois was tops in bad.

I had stuff spread all over when I put some heavier tires and ran them at full pressure. After visiting the Goodyear trailer tire site I dropped the pressure and my trailer rides much better. Goodyear recommends the amount of air based on actual weight on the tire. I weighed my Rv at a grain elevator to make sure I got it right.

Have you inspected your running gear. A broken spring, shock if you have them, etc. will also cause bad behavior. One test is to measure the amount of ground clearance to see if one side is sagging. Also watch the tires for unusual tire wear.

Philadelphia area on I-95 is not smooth! A road repair is to fix spots that need attention. This is a disgrace. I worked for the Public Works for 25 years and have never seen anything like this. How about stop building more express ways and fix the roads that are dangerous. We have been all over this country and have never driven on a road in that condition with 55 MPH speed limit.

The areas that only have 2 lanes in each direction are a big problem, also. Get miles of backups just from slow drivers, not incidents, especially from rubber-neckers.

We are going to avoid I-95 this winter and take I-80 instead. Anything is better. We are retired and not in a hurry. Just want to keep our trailer of 95. It’s too good to put it through that!

... and when the trucks are bumper-to-bumper it looks more like a train moving through.

Regardless of the road conditions or the traffic, my biggest problem is some of the drivers. I have a name for them, but it's totally inappropriate for this forum.

#9 Jacjayco- We too, lived in the DC area and paid our dues on I-95 for 15 years. I am positive I have seen your plate. In fact, I think we lived in the same neighborhood! I would laugh and nod in agreement when I would see the plate.

That seems like a pretty big detour coming from Maine. Coming from Eastern Ontario I always take the I-81 as far as Fancy Gap before heading over to I-95 for SC/GA/FL. I cannot understand why most of the locals here head over to I-95 via Washington - sure Google maps says it's 20 minutes quicker (on a 24 hour drive to Florida), but you'll lose all that time in traffic, and take 5 years off your life driving through all that traffic. I've decided that they nicknamed I-81 the 'trucker route' because the truckers are too smart to take I-95 (not that I've ever found the truck traffic overly heavy on I-81).

California has the highest gasoline tax in the nation (at least the lower 48). We are currently at 66.98 cents per gallon. And you'd think that our roads would be practically perfect!?! Some of the pot holes in our freeways are so big, we call them sink holes. I sometimes feel like we're on an obstacle course when trying to carefully dodge around the biggest cracks and holes in the road. Doesn't seem to matter if it is an 8-lane freeway or a 2-lane highway - it's all terrible. Freeway 99 down the center of the state is the worst!!

I just read that Pa is putting up easy pass collection so they can repair bridges. More money. Plus our gas tax will go up in the spring. How about stop building roads and concentrate on repairing what we have!

California I80 over the Donner Truckee area isn't any better. Going over Donner Pass at highway speeds will rattle the fillings out of your head. I have a friend that refuses to drive his car over that section of roadway. He will take his Tahoe or Jeep but never his car.

I95 to this day, is still not big enough for the traffic on it. It was built with pretensions of it being big enough. It's not. Neither is 695 or 495. They were not engineered for the traffic they handle today.

There are many multiple lane roads across the US that are unfit for RV travel...we have been on lots of them the past 3 years, crossing the country requiring tire replacements as a result. Using the wonderful local roads off the freeways has proven to be a better bet for us and gets us to see more of America at the road speed we find safest.

Living in florida the past 7 years, I can’t believe the bad roads I put up with in other states and especially NY! Makes me appreciate the Florida roadways!

Just a tip if your driving south ( from Sacramento ) on hwy 99 or I-5 in California, watch the big rig trucks in front of you, when you see them get out of the slow lane and then get back in quickly they are going around pot holes. Be prepared to do the same!
