Identifying Membership by State??

Is there any place on this website that breaks out our membership by state so one can see those that are members in your particular state???

I asked about this in the Admin and Announcements forum. It almost caused a membership melt-down. I actually asked to have the thread deleted. Even though the state is available in a members profile Admin will not include it in a thread post. It seems some members view this as a security breach and will cause untold damage to their well being should someone know what state they are in.

You can go to the Community > Member list

If you go to the community/membership tab it brings up a list of everyone. You can then sort by name, join date, or # of posts. There is also a column for state, but for some reason you can't sort by state like the other columns. Now I'm not a computer programmer guy, but it seems to me if you can use the other columns to sort, why not this one. Maybe a moderator/site team member can comment.

Somewhat like blacking out your license number in a picture but proudly displaying it while you drive all over the countryside. Kinda doesn't make any sense.

I'm not sure why it should cause a meltdown... Our membership list is sortable and if you click on the member search link you'll see an option to sort the list by location, type of rig, etc. If someone enters that state info you can find others in your area, easily this way. The state info doesn't appear next to posts because software limitations make this difficult.

It's important to remember however, that many, many accounts don;t have this info because we only added this option recently. As time passes folks will get their accounts updated and we'll have more complete info.

Just curious, why are you so deeply offended that some members don't wish to share all of their exact information? If someone doesn't want to enter one detail or another into their profile or their signature or whatever, and they don't want their information searchable that is their prerogative.

I was not at all offended.

As with all the others that got upset, you failed to even comprehend what the request was.

You assume I'm upset. Not the case. And my reading comprehension is more than adequate (I knew exactly what you were asking for). I just don't understand why it's such a big deal to you and why you feel it necessary to berate people who don't want to share the information. People should be allowed to provide as much or as little information as they want regardless of your opinion about the validity of protecting such information. Who cares if a member's location (coarse, fine or otherwise) is not provided on each of their posts?

If you want to connect with people near your area, create a group. If it's a good group and people want to share and connect, they'll join. Don't get on to mods or members just because they want to retain some control over what info is shared about them.

THANK YOU!!!!!.....Janet H..........I started this post....I'm a rookie on this site and I asked a simple question....all I wanted in return was an answer as to whether it could be done or not...and you did that!!!!!...Why did it have to create all this other JUNK from the members....certainly lowered the standards as to what I thought this site was all about

Let's all just take a deep breath, exhale slowly, and move on. There are many interesting topics discussed here, and both the members and the mods do a great job of keeping it civil and helpful. Have a great 4th, y'all !!
