Iowa to Las Vegas Height Question

Hello ALL

We just purchased a new Alante X26 in Iowa and we live in Las Vegas. We fly to get it this Saturday. Taking I-76 to Denver I-70 to I-15

I am a bit worried about the 12.5 foot height. I see on RV Trip Wizard there are tunnels and it really does not show the height warnings very well.

Has anyone traveled this route with a large Class A that could advise if there is anything to watch out for on this trip.

Any help would be great. Thanks a million and have a safe and fun summer.

Steve

When you arrive check your total RV height including A/C etc. and then (the manufacture should help with that). Find a truckers ATLAS (may be a little costly but cheaper than destroying your rig ) and it will give all those details,

And write it down on big letters where any driver can see it. That way there will be no questions about how high you are next year.

Minimum clearance for Interstate bridges was 14 ft in the 50s , in the 60s it was raised to 16 ft for new construction so I would think you would be fine on the Interstate but look out at fuel stops and local bridges.

Is there an APP that can help with this? Sorry for the stupid question, we will be totally new at this, and hate to buy another fancy GPS to hang in the truck.

We use the AllStays app for a number of reasons, one being your need. It’s not proactive (it doesn’t alert you to a low clearance ahead) but it will indicate clearances on roadways. We refer to this app when looking for a CG, planning a route and planning fuel stops. IIRC it was a one-time charge around $10. We find it very useful.

If there are semi-trucks driving on the same highways, you don’t need to worry, if you’re on interstates, you don’t need to worry, I’ve driven the majority of that route and there shouldn’t be any problems with clearance on the road.

As mentioned above your only worry would be private property canopies such as gas stations and motels.

Get a good truckers atlas and learn how to read it. Next force yourself to read the roadway signs. Specially bridge height and cornering speed signs. Driving cars and pickups you get used to ignoring these as they are for “trucks”. Now that you have a high profile unit you need to be hyper aware of these warnings. I use allstays app and preplan routes by clearing everything but the bridge height setting. I also use a rv gps system which uses my unit weight (28k)and height 13’4” to determine routing. If driving interstates I do slightly less preplan but if my route is changed or rerouted I stop and review the new route. Pay attention to construction zones as they sometime run you down the shoulder and bridge heights are determined in the actual driving lanes.

We use this. Orange roads are truck/rv friendly. There is a section with all known low bridges in every state.

TOGO also has a GPS within the app that you can configure height and width.

Get a Garmin RV dashtop nav. You can input your RVs particulars and it will route you accordingly. We have the 890 and swear by it.

I use the pdf file that ARKRUEBBE posted above every time I plan a route. Pretty good, but there is always the chance that road "improvememts" could change the clearance height by inches. Not a problem unless you come upon places with a 13'4" rig, and this is what you meet, on Hwy 82 in Alabama:

I had Becky stop, vehicles behind us waited patiently, and I got out and walked us under the trestle at slow speed. We made it. Barely.

You will not have any height issues with 76 to 70 to 15 although be prepared for the steep grades before and after the Eisenhower tunnel.

We have an alante 26x (live in Iowa) the nav system in the coach does a good job of of alerting if you are on a road that you wont fit on after you enter your parameters

Anyone take 95 in the Bronx NY AKA Cross Bronx Expressway? This scares me but may only be for the left lane. Pic is blurry on my phone. It’s 12’6’’’
