Jayco 1007 - Tow Vehicle V6/V8

Hi,
Going to need to buy a tow vehicle (literally bought cart before the horse) and wonder if I should get V6/V8. Most trips will be from Phx to Flagsaff so mountainous terrain. Thank you in advance.

You will probably be fine with a V6 but look at the tow rating of the Tow Vehicle you are interested in. As the trailer is only 2550 lbs loaded you should be fine with most v6 vans, suv's, pickups etc.
Many are rated to 3500 lbs.

I think you're right about V6 and tow rating but Im just wondering with the mountains if I will left wanting more power. hate to be stuck doing 50mph on the ride up to Flag (prefer about 75mph)

Good point. A small V8 would be no problem and I would also recommend a transmission cooler for hill climbs in the heat. I would also recommend checking the speed rating on the trailer's tires and making sure the tire pressure is correct and the wheel bearings are properly maintained if you plan to do 75 on a regular basis.

Your trailer tires aren't rated for over 65 mph.

ok, I'll keep it at 65mph. Don't even know what a transmission cooler is! Will new trucks have this as part of a 'tow package'?

Yes they should. Also if the truck is a half ton rated to pull heavier loads like 8500+ lbs you probably won't even notice the trailer is there.

If your considering a 1/2 ton truck I would go with a V-8 at a minimum, and have the truck configured such that you get the maximum Payload Capacity along with the HD Tow Package option offered.

The 1/2 ton truck will be more then capable for towing your Jayco 1007 under the conditions you described, but at least you want to have some additional Payload Capacity available should you decide to up-grade to a bigger trailer in the future.

Please note, TV Payload Capacity is important with heavier trailers because a trailer's loaded tongue weight is subtracted from the TV's Payload Capacity. The Tow Ratings of 1/2 ton trucks are attractive, but it's the Payload Capacities that are the first to be used up be a trailer.

Hope this helps.

Bob

Coming from a V6 and 10' popup AND THEN upgrading to a hybrid TT within a year - go for a V8 with a good tow rating. Then when you do inevitably upgrade (as many of us have done!!) You will have more options for what TT you upgrade to and won't have to worry as much abut replacing your TV.

Agreed with the others...oversize your TV, you will be a much happier person. The comments regarding V6 vs V8 is dead on unless you are thinking an F150. The newer ecoboost engine is insane on hills. A 6cyc rated for 11k of towing optioned correctly (max tow, 3.73 gearing, etc). I was in the Hills of Hocking in Ohio, I was accelerating up the hills. Others got to the top and their fluids were burning.

I agree, in the case of the Ford F-150 matched with the V6 EcoBoost/HD Tow Package is a nice TV with a generous payload capacity for a 1/2 ton.

I agree with Heady & Rustic Eagle. I have the F-150 V6 Eco-boost w/HD towing package. It makes for an awesome towing package. The former owner had used it to pull a 5th Wheel!
Have to give props to clutch, as well. You're right; nobody complains about having too much truck.

If you are going to buy a truck, might as well get one with a real truck engine. Get a V-8 and don't mess around with a hopped up 6 cyl. You can never replace displacement when you are working your truck. Most new V-8 engines have as much or more HP and torque as the eco-bust, and get equal fuel mileage. Not here to argue this point, the numbers are out there. When it comes to towing, bigger is better.

Go with a V8 if for no other reason than possible future use. I bought a 1/2 ton pickup not anticipating buying a camper and then a bigger camper. Now I need a 3/4 ton. Just sayin'.
