Jayco bumper-receiver for bike carrier

Hi there, I want to get a bolt on receiver that can be attached to the rear bumper of my Jayco 29L. Once that is on, it would be easy enough to get a 4 bike carrier and pop it on to the receiver without issue.

However, the thought crossed my mind...would the bumper itself be OK to have some weight added to it? Would anyone know how to determine if this is OK to do? I see it being done quite a bit but want to make sure I do it right.

Thanks for any help!

The rear bumper is made of thin metal that is welded in 2 places to a frame bracket. The welds will eventually break and the bumper and anything hanging on it will be gone.
I would recommend having a hitch shop reinforce and weld a proper receiver before hanging anything other than a spare tire on it.

Lots of posts say 100 pound max on the rear bumper as installed. Also, use search bar above and find people who have add support, had receivers welded on and a few that had stuff come off on the road.
Search function on gold bar above will help you know more.

I would not put a 4 bike carrier on the back of a TT if connected directly to a bumper. The cantilevered forces and bouncing will be way to much for the bumpers weldments.

There are a few options, personally I would recommend going to a welding shop and ask them to weld up a custom 2" receiver hitch. It will be reinforced to the frame, and you will never worry about it.

WOW, thanks for the quick replies.....and the tips.

I did also use the search function as advised (maybe I should have done that in the first place )

But it certainly seems that this is a bad idea from what I've read on this thread and the others as well. Some people get away with it but "Murphy's Law" and I don't get along very well, so this will most likely end in disaster for me.

Look like a visit to a welding shop for a custom mod or maybe look at one of those tongue attached bike carriers.....Back to the research!

Thanks again for the help!
